Music Appreciation, Monday, Period 1
Today, at the front of the classroom, Jono and Hannibal's students would be met with a television set, not a stereo system, and their two teachers standing not far from it.
At least TVs were lighter these days.
//So, you might've noticed the weekend was a little off,// Jono noted from his usual spot leaning back against the desk. //We were going to put together a lesson on sequential music telling a story, from opera to concept albums, but, er...//
They'd spent their entire weekend celebrating the fact that there were no children in the house. They did about as much lesson planning as one might expect.
"Our twenty-year-older selves had other priorities," Hannibal finished smoothly. "So instead, we have an example of sequential music telling a story."
//Those of you who mentioned an interest in musical theatre might be familiar withmeta for Cabaret,// Jono said, holding up a DVD case for all to see. //In fact, we touched on it briefly last week in our discussions. We figured it would be an excellent example of musical storytelling.//
And they hadn't been able to findmeta for Chicago on such short notice.
"Any of you that have objections to sexual subjects -"
//For any reason starting with 'age,' moving into 'general discomfort,' and ending at 'American prudishness,'// Jono helpfully supplied.
"- may feel free to leave at any time," Hannibal finished with an amused look at him. "Also, there is a good deal of treatment of racism, fascism, and other subjects that you may find objectionable. I hope we may discuss them after. Should you feel the need to leave, it will in no way affect your grade."
So, at least there was that. Jono waited for a moment, in case anybody wanted to take off to actually make use of that long weekend that most of the rest of America had, and then he lifted the remote and hit 'play.'

Movie!
Re: Movie!
He sat down and tried to pay attention as deeply as he was capable of. It was... somewhat successful.
Re: Movie!
Oh. He kinda looked like he was off. A bit.
He was... probably not expecting the stuffed elephant she offered him silently. Look, he looked like he could use a friend. Alluka had a portable friend with her.
He could sit with her elephant.
Re: Movie!
He blinked. A few times.
"Uh..."
Sorry, Alluka. He wasn't firing on all cylinders today.
Re: Movie!
It was a white lie, really, since her elephant was amendable to the idea, but it was Alluka who wanted her elephant to keep Dante company.
Re: Movie!
Or maybe it was because this morning had brought some vivid memories of being a lost seven-year-old in a world where nobody bothered with stuffed toys, even when you were a lonely kid that could've used one.
Or maybe he just needed the elepehant to get out of his sight so he could get back to trying to block out the rest of the world.
Whatever it was, he nodded and took the elephant. Silently. He sat it down in his lap and hunched over it.
Re: Movie!
A lot of times she didn't want to talk about bad things. That's why it was so important to have a friend with her, so she didn't have to.
Dante had her elephant now to look after him, at least for a little while, and she could edge her desk over a little closer too. She still wasn't going to say anything though, she was just going to sit there and doodle crazed pictures of rainbows and shoes and blood and keep him company.
There. That would do, right?
Re: Movie!
It wasn't going to blow away the maelstrom of feelings Dante was trying to shove back inside of himself so he could hit functional again - as functional as he usually was. But in a weird way, it helped that she offered. And that she wasn't making a big deal about it or anything.
So he was going to sit there, looking like this incongruous image of mean punk with a stuffed elephant cuddled in his lap, watching the movie but not really registering it.
Re: Movie!
She'd just thought he'd needed a friend. Maybe she'd ask Mabel to make him one later.
Alluka bobbed her head a little to the tune of her own internal soundtrack as she drew and asked nothing else of him.
Re: Movie!
He didn't look at her again until class was almost over. He took in the drawings, but said nothing about them.
He held the elephant back out for her to take. It was hers, after all.
Re: Movie!
"Thank you," she said, and rummaged around in her bag for a moment. She pulled out another toy, this one a doll with round, blue eyes and white hair, and offered it to him. "This one wants to go with you though," she said earnestly. "It looks like my brother, Killua."
Re: Movie!
Brother-the-doll. Whatever.
Re: Movie!
Alluka was... pretty resigned to that particular fact.
"And, and I got my whole family as toys, so it's okay if he goes with you."
Re: Movie!
He wasn't really in the mood to fight. Especially not when it involved her family. "Okay," he said, reaching for the doll. "Thanks."
Re: Movie!
"You're welcome!"
Re: Movie!
A little awkward, maybe, but he was trying to tough through it.
(The blood gave them character.)
Re: Movie!
It was soothing and fun and there were so many colours.
Re: Movie!
Re: Movie!
Alluka had no idea what to say. It was probably obvious.
Re: Movie!
He'd destroyed the vast majority of the work; the only reason any of his fire-blood-and-brimstone crap was still around was because Lecter had sabotaged him at one point.
Re: Movie!
Re: Movie!
Re: Movie!
Alluka's faith in Killua was huge and not entirely justified.
Re: Movie!
Be careful what you wish for.Re: Movie!
But she was being quiet, at least, as she doodled. That counted for something, right?
Re: Movie!
Maybe Karla was right. You really couldn't love carefully and fully at the same time.
So, yeah. She was perfectly happy to throw all her attention at the movie, which was a show her mom hadn't let her watch before. She very, very quickly realized why, and shifted a little uncomfortably in her desk, but she was determined to stick it out. And not go back and hide in her room.

Talk to the Teachers!
Re: Talk to the Teachers!
It had been a very good and very interesting weekend.
Re: Talk to the Teachers!
But here Jono was. In case anybody wanted to give him a reason to talk more.
OOC!
