Extreme PE [Monday, Period 3]

Bond had his class meet him at the Danger Shop, which was set to look like the top of a very tall, very steep snow-covered mountain. A collection of skiing and snowboarding equipment was set out near Bond.

"Welcome to the class, I'm Professor Bond and this is Extreme PE," he said after greeting them. "Over the new few weeks we'll be looking at some of the more dangerous which would be irresponsible or impossible for me to attempt to teach you outside of the Danger Shop."

He gestured to the slopes. "We'll be starting simple today, you can choose to either ski or snowboard down the mountain. That is after introductions of course. Name, class, and one of the more foolhardy situations you've found yourself in."

The descent is steep, twisty, and the slightest wrong move will see you tumbling down the mountain encased in a safe but ridiculous looking giant snowball.

Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren

"I am Jalian. I am a junior - no, a senior now," she realized. "Some people would say that traveling a neg-entropy timeline is foolhardy."

Because it was very likely to kill anyone, and had nearly killed her, yes.

"What are the differences between the two?" Jalian asked. "I have moved on skis of a sort on flat lands, but I've never seen the other."

"I'm not sure what that is, but it certainly sounds dangerous enough."

"Snowboarding developed from skiing, along with surfing and skateboarding," Bond explained. "The boards tend to be shorter and wider than skis, and you only use the one. You also stand with your feet across the board as opposed to inline as you do with skis."

"It's..." Jalian tried to put it in simple terms. "A timeline where everything runs backward from the one you're in. Energy, biological processes, time - everything. If you go into a one-to-one negative-entropy-ratio timeline, it would kill you instantly. If you try one with a million-to-one ratio, it would kill you more slowly. I hopped through. Like a stone across water? Until it kicked me out."

Jalian nodded. "How do you steer it? With your weight?"

"That certainly would qualify," Bond said dryly.

"Yes," Bond confirmed, nodding. "You don't use poles like you might when skiing."

Jalian shrugged. "It was the only way to get where I wanted." That was the important part.

Hm. It sounded interesting. And Jalian had surfed a little before, even if ken Selvren fishing-surfing was a bit different from the modern sort.

"I'll try that."

And spend quite a bit of time on flat land first, getting used to moving the board. She liked speed; she wasn't stupid about it.

"My name's Rey, and I suppose I'm a junior now," she said. "The first time I tried claiming around a Star Destroyer I wasn't entirely prepared."

Rey had no experience with either of these things, but she figured she might have more control with skis.

"Please don't fall and die," she murmured to herself.

Kira Yukimura

"I'm Kira, I'm a senior--" Oh god, how was that real? "--and I've gotten lost in New York City before?" She was so boring, sorry Bond.

Considering how steep the hill was, Kira was going to stick to skiing. She figured she'd be safer on two even feet, and she may have squealed the whole way down the hill.

Bond wasn't sure why he was even surprised, he'd been here long enough. "I imagine few are."

After the last two, boring was a relief. "Big cities have their own dangers," he said.
