Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques | Tuesday, period 1

"Welcome, everybody," Hannibal greeted them. "I hope you all had interesting weekends with your potential children. This is our last week of class, and this is your exam." He gestured at the shop's setup, which included both computer stations and functional kitchens this time. "I've made available a wide variety of meats, produce, spices, and other materials. I want you each to cook a meal. It should have at least three dishes and include at least one drink to go with it.

"The more you use of what you've learned this semester, the higher your grade. You will get points for presentation, difficulty, number of dishes, how well the parts of the meal fit together, creativity, and proper cooking technique." Almost like a real class! Or a cooking contest.

"You may use whatever resources you like, including each other, the Internet, and me. But do keep in mind your time is limited."

He smiled "Any questions?"

Yeah, Dante had several different reasons not to have his head in the game today, and he wasn't exactly a great cook to begin with. He got some soup going because it was easy... ish, and then wound up standing there for at least two minutes eyeing it before deciding to go do anything else.

It was hard to miss that level of distraction. But Dante didn't strike Hannibal as the type to respond to gentle inquiry.

So, he took a different approach.

"Unless you've suddenly developed the ability to cook by staring at food, I'd suggest using the stove."

Dante didn't startle, exactly, but his head snapped over and he was narrowing his eyes at Hannibal a second later. "Who knows," he drawled, "Maybe I've got laser vision."

"Anything is possible in this place," Hannibal answered, "but I'm not seeing any lasers. And they'd be a poor cooking tool for this sort of thing."

Dante shrugged. "It makes things hot, right?" he asked.

He wasn't actually paying a whole lot of attention.

"In a very small area and without much control," Hannibal said. "And I'm still not seeing any. I like to think that in this entire class you have at least learned how to operate the stove and oven."

"You pull the wiggly bits until the fire comes out," Dante said. "Well, for the stove, not the oven. If there's flames in the oven, you did something really wrong, or really right."

That actually made Hannibal smirk. "Very wrong, in this class. Perform arson on your own time."

"Aren't there deserts you can set on fire?" Dante wondered. "Shoulda done some of that."

Chances of that keep his attention after everything that had happened recently: slim, but probably higher.
