Another class, another portal, though this time, they weren't going anywhere cool and foreign, like a lasersword school in Russia. If Hardison had been willing to waste the time, they could have just taken the shuttle to their destination, but portals were faster and didn't require him to drive a shuttle. Or let students into his newest Lucille. But he could understand any confusion his class might have had when the portal let them out in downtown Baltimore, outside of a large car maintenance garage.

"Yo, so, this one's more for folks who are stickin' around the modern time," he said, "but it's still a bunch of useful skills for anybody to pick up. Today, vehicles are damn near impossible to avoid, even if you ain't got one yourself. For those of you who do have a car, or will in the future, knowin' some basic maintenance an' how to keep it goin' will save you so much time an' effort in the long run."

"And money, too," one of the mechanics called out.

Hardison grinned. "That's right," he agreed. "Knowin' how to fix your own stuff is the easiest way to save cash. So we're here to get you the basics in how to keep your car goin' just a little longer an' a little further." One of the mechanics stepped forward. "This is Ben," Hardison said. "He an' Eric are gonna teach you what y'all need to know."

And then Ben is going to follow it up with one of his own, explaining some basic automotive maintenance.

Now it's Eric's turn to come over and teach the class a few things. There are plenty of cars in the shop, so each student has one to practice on.

After Eric explains how, you try it.

The battery run out of juice? After the demo, there's a car in the middle that can give a car a jump, or ask one of your classmates if they've already gotten their car going.

And once the other two mechanics have shown you how to handle legitimate issues, Hardison comes forward to show you how to pop a car lock and then hotwire a car with the wires behind the ignition switch.

It's highly illegal on any cars that you don't own, but a useful skill.

She was indeed, and a little grumpy at how long it was going to take to wash the grease off her when she got home.

Sometimes, only pretending to wear clothes had some drawbacks.

Ada wasn't trying to look innocent at all. Hell, she wasn't even gonna fake that she didn't know what she was doing.

She did watch with interest as he used the shiv to pop the lock. "Why'd you go that route?" she asked, shaking her head and sitting down to pull the shoelace out of the slightly-oversized motorcycle boots she was wearing today. "There's way easier ways to get one of these open."

Was it going to take Ada about ten seconds to open the door of her car? yes, yes it was.

Was Hardison going to watch her maneuver with interest? Yes, yes he was.

"Not every lock is like that one, though," he said, pointing to another car with the lock recessed in the door. " 'Specially newer cars. Rather teach y'all one trick that'll work on most cars than several that only work on specific types." He gave her a speculative look. "Nice moves though. Simple, easy, an' fast."

"Oh, I got picks that'll work on newer ones," she said with a shrug. "But ain't no reason to risk screwin' up the lock if'n you've just locked yourself out an' it's an older one you can get a good grip on."

Right, Ada, because you totally knew how to do that from locking yourself out of cars.

Hardison just gave her an unimpressed look. "You wanna try runnin' that grift on me again?" he suggested. "But, like, actually sellin' it."

Ada just grinned. "If'n I was runnin' a grift, you wouldn't know," she promised cheerfully. "I ain't got keys to every truck the carnival owns, but that don't stop people from yellin' at me to get 'em moved!"

True!

"I just got lots a bored cousins that teach me interestin' stuff." Also true! "An' I like workin' on stuff too much to mess it up if I don't gotta." Again, true.

"Ain't like I go around stealin' cars on a regular basis...where would I put 'em?" Aaaaaaaaaand mostly-true. It wasn't a regular basis.

"There are lots of things I don't do on a regular basis," Hardison noted, amused. "But hey, you wanna teach your classmates how to use their shoelaces to pick locks, I ain't gonna stop you."

In fact, he was going to practice so he could show Parker what he'd learned in class today.
