Around The World in Sixteen Challenges, Thursday

Today brought the students to Istanbul. Or Constantinople. Not that either teacher could explain that joke. "Welcome to Turkey, which is a country and a bird, but the bird isn't found here, as far as I know." He looked confused about it.

"Presumably, the bird is called something different in this country," Obi-Wan said, a wry smile on his face. "Today, you will encounter some of the nation's most famous attributes: sails, spas, and the local cuisine."

If he was sad it didn't alliterate fully, you could not tell by his expression.

"All by foot," Anakin added because he was mean.

"There will be some walking involved," Obi-Wan allowed. "But that's good for the spirit."

"And the calves," Anakin added, smirking slightly.

Obi-Wan coughed. It was by no means a display of amusement. "I wish you great success," he said, "and may the Force be with you."

After walking a whopping mile down to a beautiful Turkish bay, each team is assigned a smallish Turkish gulet. Using the offered list of instructions, they must prep the boat to set sail as fast as possible.

Teams finish as follows:

"Don't worry, I've been reading up on this." Since she had her own (much better) ship she was trying to figure her way around. "...what's electrical maintenance?"

They hadn't gotten to that stage yet in Thedas.

"My specialty, actually," Anakin said with a genuine smile. "We're going to do well today."

Cosette picked up the list of instructions to read, undaunted by the prospect of the challenge . . . until she saw everything that was on the list.

"This may take a while."

"I don't know the first thing about boats," Blue admitted.

Ah. Well, April knew how to sail a boat. Excuse her if she was a bit pushy in the prepping process, Nathan; she went to summer camp, after all, and she had her Navel Gauging badge.

Yay, she wasn't coming in last this week!

Alex did not know how to sail a boat and her confidence in completing this task was not helped as she read through the list of instructions.

After each team is done with the sails, individual students must walk the entire mile back uphill to the local hammam bathhouse, where students will be instructed on how to use large cloth 'socks to make a thick, bubbly soap covering.

Each student must do it three times to the satisfaction of the hammam staff before they can move on.

Isabela got kind of...distracted during this one. Which everyone involved should have seen coming, really.

In Make Bread, students must prepare five Turkish pides for the oven. Once the pides go in, you may move on.

In Break Bread, students will instead take to the streets with the pides, and attempt to sell at least ten on the market, all the while avoiding anyone trying to sell you anything. Good luck!

Isabela took the selling option, largely because she'd noticed that there were more than ten pides on each tray.

Oh, April could sell. April could totally sell. She jumped up on a ledge and started waving her arms wildly to get people's attention, smiling big, and wafting the tray toward people's noses.

Piece. Of. Cake. Or pide.

After finishing in the market, you get to trek another mile up the hill to the hotel lobby that Obi-Wan and Anakin are waiting at.

At least when you're there, there will be tea and cushions.

Isabela arrived chewing on a pide that certain people had no way to prove that she had or hadn't paid for.

"I like this place, it's warm, there's decent tea." Even if it could use some proper spices.

"You're eighth today," Anakin said, looking askance at the pide.

"What?" Isabela asked, curling her free hand protectively over the pide. Hers. Get your own, Anakin.

April was so determined to keep up her head start that she practically sprinted up the hill. By the time she got winded and realized that sprinting might have been a mistake, she was there!

"Oh." Well, that was convenient. "Holy Evelyn Ashford, that was a big hill."

"And yet," Obi-Wan said, smiling at her, "you are first."

That's what they're here for. Allegedly.

Obi-Wan is mostly preoccupied trying to find the least sweet of the teas.

Anakin was trying to figure out how to pick up the glass without burning his fingers. Ow.

I need to stop making myself crave pide.
