Around the World in Sixteen Challenges

Today's class met outside the gates of a castle. The air smelled faintly of livestock. Is everyone worried yet?

"Welcome to Italy," Anakin said with a fiendish grin. "Today will be your first paired challenge. You will participate in the Palio della Tonna."

And no, he would not be translating what that meant. Neither would Obi-Wan, for that matter.

"After that, you may become acquainted with some of the traditional foods of the region," Obi-Wan said. "You will do this individually, and the final race will be an individual event as well. However, proper teamwork in the Palio della Tonna will be instrumental in giving you a good lead on your competitors, so please, try not to sabotage one another."

"Or hurt the livestock," Anakin added. "Master Unwin might be an excellent partner for this task, given his newly acquired detention expertise."

Did Obi-Wan just very loudly clear his throat? No, obviously not. "Finally, one will find us at the top of the Basilica," he said, "We will provide climbing gear, of course." Because Anakin was still entirely too obsessed with Laura's judgement. Sigh.

Palio Della Tonna!

You and your partner will be on a pair of donkeys. You both need to complete three laps around the track before the band stops playing--if you don't, you get to do it again.

And again.

And again.

The pairings are (in race results order):

Every time Kira approached one of the donkeys, it made a terrible noise and shied away from her. This was going to go so well.

Road Block: Stuff It or Get Stuffed

In Stuff It, you travel through Rome on a Vespa (without getting lost or run over or flipped off by a nun) to the National Pasta Museum. An Italian nonna will demonstrate, in Italian, the correct way to make cheese ravioli.

You must then replicate what she did and make 200 ravioli on your own. She will then judge the hell out of them and make you do them over at least once. When you have made them to her standards, you can go on to the next challenge.

In Get Stuffed, you will travel via Vespa (without getting lost or run over or flipped off by a nun) to Gelateria Valentino, where the four dozen gelato options in the freezer have had their identification cards removed. You must taste and correctly match all 48 flavors to their cards, which are in Italian, before you get your next clue.

Ahahahaha cooking.

Through sheer ignorance and disregard for the road rules, Isabela made good time on her trip to the Gelateria. Then it was less a matter of using her tastebuds (though she did try the gelato too) as her cleavage charm on a hapless attendant to help her pick the right cards.

Eggsy's Italian was limited to things like telling someone to fuck off and flirting. So he felt confident about trying to match gelato flavors.

It went about as well as could be expected.

April went with the gelato challenge, and learned in the process that she had absolutely no driving skills. It was seriously bad.

The gelato was a good consolation prize, though. Although that was seriously a lot of it.

She just hoped her next task wouldn't involve too much exercise, since she was pretty full...

Last week Rey had vowed not to do anymore food challenges.

This week her teachers were screwing with her.

She went for the ravioli, since that didnt mean eating.

Alex's Italian was basically limited to food names so she spent a few moments debating before going with the gelato challenge.

It took her a while but eventually she was able to correctly identify the different flavours.

Vespas were so much better than donkeys, and Kira was really really happy that she picked the option that involved gelato. She was slightly less happy when she was full of gelato, even after taking small tastes, but her vague knowledge of foreign languages came in handy with the matching.

Detour: Climb the Basilica!

There are 551 steps to take you up to the top of St. Peter's Basilica.

But that doesn't matter, because your teacher is Anakin Skywalker, and you're going to get to climb up a rope outside for the entire 132 meters.

This, at least, April knew she could do. Lifting her whole body weight was no problem!

She scurried up the rope like it was nothing and even managed to take a couple selfies in the process. Wheeeee!

It took Alex a bit to be able to push herself up on the rope but she was fine once she got going and was able to climb the rope with out any problems.
