Psych 101 - February Quiz

1. Individuation. Define it and give me an example.
The process/es through which undifferentiated persons develop individual characteristics, or the opposite process, by which aspects of an individual are integrated into a more indivisible whole. Simply put, it is the struggle to define oneself as an individual.

2. Define either art therapy or sandtray therapy, and then tell me how you feel about it.
Art therapy: Uses creation/creativity to increase emotional well-being. Combines traditional psychotherapeutic ideas and techniques with specialized knowledge about the psychological aspects of the creative process, especially the affective properties of different art materials. Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process involved in making art is healing and life-enhancing.

3. Jung's stages of life. Pick one and tell me how you feel about it.
Adolescene: I think Jung was pretty on target with his theories on this stage. He proposed that this is where a lot of individuation is going on, and that the majority of it depends on whether you're an introvert or extrovert.

At this stage in my life, I do think that nearly everything I do and/or discover (as I'm only seventeen and definitely stil figuring out most things) factors into my being an introvert. I've been called "shy," and I certainly wouldn't argue that point. But my tendency to absorb myself in my studies and my conscious hesitancy in dealings with boys has less to do with "shyness" and much more to do with my introvertism.

4. The collective unconscious - pseudoscience, or really applicable?
Pseudoscience; it's not empirically applicable in any significant way. If/when it's ever proven, it might become actually applicable. However, at this point in time, it's interesting but not an option for practical application.

5. Thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition. Pick one and talk about it.
Intuition - one of the 'irrational' functions, called as much because it relates to stimuli as opposed to evaluation. Intuition is based on hunches and gut feelings, and I personally think that a good portion of that is based on prior experience and anticipation, rather than any sort of predisposition or serendipity.

6. Tell me about dream interpretation.
"If we want to interpret a dream correctly, we need a thorough knowledge of the conscious situation at that moment, because the dream contains its unconscious complement [...] Without this knowledge it is impossible to interpret a dream correctly, except by a lucky fluke."

Jung said that about dream interpretation. His general philosophy seemed to be that dreams depended more upon the dreamer and their life than any universal symobolism.

Extra Credit - Space Battles XII and Space Battles XIII: Who was your favorite character, or what was your favorite part of either movie?
My favorite character was Dark Helmet.

Yes, he was the bad guy. But you have to wonder what went wrong to drive him to that. Was he born corrupt, or were there forces in his life that pushed him to such an extreme? Was he ever just a normal person? Did he have a childhood? Did he ever love? Did he aspire to become what he did, or did something go wrong?

Naturally I know the answers to this since I've seen the prequels. But when working with the older films exclusively, these are the questions that occur to me.

Broots answered all the questions while humming cheerfully to himself. He even did the extra credit. While still cheerful.

Hamlet takes the quiz. He does quite well on the material he was in class for, but not so good in the things he missed while frozen.

1. Individuation. Define it and give me an example.
The process of becoming who you're going to be. Learning about yourself. Facing all of your inner part. Jung spent a lot of time talking about facing the shadow. Many Jedi meditation techniques are focused on the same thing.

2. Define either art therapy or sandtray therapy, and then tell me how you feel about it.
Sandtray theory is working with sand instead of words to work out how you feel about something. I don't like sand. It's rough and gets everywhere.

3. Jung's stages of life. Pick one and tell me how you feel about it.
Anakin spent a great deal of paper talking about the leaving family stage of life and the effect of this happening earlier in life.

All hypothetically, of course.

4. The collective unconscious - pseudoscience, or really applicable?
Anakin wrote about his cracked-out theory that the collective unconsious was Jung's way of expressing the Force.

5. Thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition. Pick one and talk about it.
An entire page about intuition and going with your gut.

6. Tell me about dream interpretation.
Conspicuously left blank.

...I may have spent too much time on my quiz. But I'm actually in a psych class at the moment, and am boredinated.

And also we're talking about dream interpretation, and that amuses me.
