A tall blond man in a ~~hideous~~ plaid shirt and pleated khakis ~~and the shoulder to hip ratio of a Dorito~~ stood at the front of the classroom, trying not to feel like a performing monkey again.

"Hello," he said. "I'm your teacher. Apparently. I'm Steve Rogers, and some of you may recognize me from your own...realities."

He was pleased at how normal he sounded saying that aloud.

"But if not, that's completely fine." Really. Better than fine, if you asked Steve. "This is 20th Century American History, but if you don't know history or aren't American, that's all right, too. We're going to be learning together. My knowledge ends around World War II," if you didn't count the pop culture references Tony had been throwing at him since Wednesday, "but I'm a fast learner." He pulled out a little paper notebook. "So let's start with who everyone is and something you think we should all know about the 20th Century. I'll start. The internet is so helpful."

You sound a million years old, Steve. "I've been using it to catch up. Back home, I would have had to hoof it down to the library instead." He pointed to the student straight in front of him. "Now you."

Xanthippe flicked her hair back. "Well, like, it was the first war on TV," she said. "So people could like, see it back here? Plus there was like, major opposition that just grew as it went on. Also we lost."

Steve's eyes widened slightly at that last point and made a mental note to get to the Vietnam War as quickly as possible.

"I can see how that would affect history," Steve said. "Probably still reverberates, if it wasn't too long ago."

"It was long ago, like the stone age." Well, for a person born in 2000... "Ended in the seventies."

And Steve felt a billion years old, suddenly. "So almost fifty years ago. That's a long time," Steve agreed. "How many wars since then?"

Xanthippe shrugged. "Depends on how you even define a war, or whatever. I mean we've been at war in the Middle East since, like, I was born. It's getting way predictable and boring."

You were really maxing out her willingness to admit to knowledge here, Steve.

Steve arched up an eyebrow. "War's getting boring."

Welcome to the jaded 21st century. By way of a privileged rich kid with little to no perceived stake in the game, and very little self-awareness.

She shrugged again.

Welcome to the Captain America is Very Disappointed in You Face, Xanthippe.

"People still die in wars, right?" Steve checked. "It's not run by robots?"

That was quite the face. Although Xanthippe only faltered a little bit, all the same.

"There are drones?" she offered.

Steve pursed his lips in disapproval. "There are also soldiers, most who are only a couple years older than you are. That's not boring."

"Sorry?" Xanthippe offered, not in any sincere way, but rather in a 'you're annoyed and I don't get why so I just want it to stop, thanks' kind of way. That's why it sounded halfway like a question.

Steve amped up his disapproving face as all of the soldiers he'd known flashed through his mind, Bucky first. "Sure you are," he said, walking off.
