Subcultures 101, Tuesday, Period 3

"Hey, everybody," Didi said from her perch atop the desk. "I'm Didi. Welcome to Subcultures 101, where we talk about how people get together in groups to feel unique."

She flashed a quick smile, hinting she was kidding, then went on. "According to our friend Wikipedia, a subculture is 'a group of people within a culture that differentiates itself from the parent culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding principles.' What that means is a subculture is a group of people that's different from the mainstream culture -- but not too different. They are often perceived negatively by mainstream society, which may see people who belong to subcultures as lazy, sexually deviant, or juvenile. Meanwhile, people who identify with a subculture may see the mainstream as boring, repressive, or" -- airquotes -- "simply uncool."

She slid off the desk and passed a handout to the students. "This is Wikipedia's list of subcultures. Some of those are probably familiar to most of you from this reality, like preppy, goth or punk. Others are going to be more obscure. What I want to do today is introductions with name, grade, why you're in this class, and one subculture you either identify with or want to know more about."

"I'm Velma Martinez and I'm a junior," she said, her class rank coming out very flat. Bad enough she was eighteen and should probably be a senior, but she and the word junior had a history together.

Damn it, Santa. This whole thing was fucked up timed five.

"I guess I wanna learn about..." She looked down at the handout again. She knew way, way too many of these from lurking on various Junior Super Patriot fan forums. "Stilyaga?"

"Thanks," said Velma, appreciating the option of picking a subculture to learn about rather than having to claim the one she was in.

The one she had been in, rather.

"I'm Mabel Pines, in this class because I love discovering new things, and finding out about other people's interests! Me," she looked at the handout, "I guess I fit most easily under the teenybopper category, but if there's some kind of 80s subculture that Wikipedia left out, I am totally there."

No, really. Mabel's musical tastes skewed 80s and her fashion sense was something straight out of a Lisa Frank nightmare.

"Which they are welcome to wear any time they want," Mabel decreed appreciatively. "I don't suppose there's something for a Millennial who thinks chunky jewelry and legwarmers are perfectly appropriate party wear and who once successfully bedazzled her own face?"

"And if I don't, maybe Mabels just aren't meant to be put into boxes," Mabel mused. "Either way, I'm looking forward to finding out!"

"I'm Gwen and I'm here because you were kind of a cool teacher," Gwen said. "And let's get some glitterpunk up in here."

"Face, it sounded interesting and some of these 'scooter' based ones sound like really weird swoop gangs."

A scooter was very little like a swoopbike, Face.

"A swoop's pretty much a souped-up repulsor engine with handles and a seat," he said. "Very fast."

She could probably figure out the rest from that.

"I'm Eric Bittle, and I'm here because... well, it just sounded interesting. I don't know if want is the right word, exactly, but I suppose it would be helpful to know why jocks are so... bro-y?"
