Lying 101, Monday Second Period

"I know what you're thinking," Lito told his students once he was sure they were all accounted for. "'But Mr. Rodriguez, I thought honesty was a virtue,' and it is. But it's not the only virtue, and you never know when a lie will be useful. A little lie can smooth over a lot of social interactions. It could save your relationship. Or even your life. Or it can be your entire life's work. Take me, I'm an actor. If you reduce my job to its most basic parts, it's lying convincingly, and memorizing scripts.

"So, today, you are going to introduce yourselves. And by the way, if anyone would like to be a teacher's assistant, please see me after class. Now. Please," he said, perching on the edge of his desk and opening his hands to them. "Lie to me."

At first, Lucille thought that not straying too far from the truth would be the best choice, but then she considered the people she had met here. No one would be able to tell if she made up something completely crazy, would they?

"My name is Elizabeth Willmott, and I arrived here from 1872." Her dress might not be that unfashionable, but hopefully no one would know. "I grew up at sea, on my father's pirate ship, but had to go and stay with my great-aunt outside Manchester to get an education. She was a devout spiritualist and has taught me to converse with the spirit world. Sadly, she passed away a few months ago, and while she still communicates with me daily from beyond the grave, my father sent me here to study."

The expression on her face was rather blank, but the twitches at the corner of her mouth gave away that she was holding back a smile.

"Oh, of course!" Here Lucille faltered a little. She knew nothing about ships, or about pirate adventures in general, but finally added: "Although I easily get seasick."

"I couldn't possibly lie," Face said, eyes wide and innocent as a bantha cub's. "It's be wrong."

He was also speaking in an accent that was pure Correllian, rather than his own which he'd used all last semester.

"I really can't," he said, still with that Correllian drawl. "If it got about that a Jedi was lying..."

Face, no.

"My name is -- Bobo Treemont the third." Lottie was not the best at this game. Or at her attempt at a posh accent, for that matter. "I have several titles but 'Bobo' will suffice. Or 'your lordshipness'. I am 56th in line for the throne of England, Scottland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It was 57th, but my older brother suffered -- a mysterious and unfortunate accident."

Yeah, she couldn't come up with a backstory that didn't have a mystery in it. Even if that mystery cast herself as the prime suspect.

"It is impolite to question one's lordshipness's gender presentation," Lottie said with tremendous dignity -- and entirely forgetting her posh accent. "And I should think that as a British citizen I should know about peerages."

She barely knew what the word meant.

Lottie sat upright and popped her hand over her mouth as she realized her mistake, then nodded her thanks.

"I'm Ed Cobleigh," Edward said, "and I'm told I'm some rich ponce with too much time and too little to do by the smallfolk, but they clearly've no idea of how to handle a man of my station."

He was doing a passing impression of both the real Cobleigh - proper English accent and all - and a certain prissy Englishman by name of Crane he'd known on the island.

Without the insults, it might have even been passable.

"Takes the wind a bit out of their sails," Edward said easily. "Doesn't it? Besides, 's long as people are aware I'm a complete knobhead, they won't go in unwarned."

Well, he'd already had her in one class, so at least Ada didn't have to worry about trying to come up with something he'd believe, just something ANYONE would believe.

"Ah'm Adeline," she said, dipping into her mother's pure Alabama drawl. "My grandparents think ah'm at a convent school, but ah think they may a been misled."

Her eyes slipped towards the boys in tje class. "Though ah must confess, ah'm startin' to think maybe becoming a nun isn't for me."

"Really?" Ada Adeline looked utterly intrigued. "Whatever tempted you away from such a noble path?"

"I'm Signhild Ragnarsdottir," Vider said. "I'm from Alta California kingstate, and my family follow Odin, but I want to follow Freyr the Satisfied. That's why they sent me away to boarding school. Please don't tell them this place isn't like they thought."

Vider's shoulders slumped a little, disappointed at being caught out, before she rallied and said, "I don't know what you mean, sir. They think this place is like the Hangadrottin."
