Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Ahhh, Frank," Kathy said as if that explained everything. Because, really, it did. "Yeah, you can give them a little rum and they'll run off and not listen in on your conversation. Because they're furry little lushes."

Welcome to weird sentences you'd only say on this island, Laura.

"I'm in room 508," she added. "In case you ever want to come visit. You're always welcome and I usually have stuff to eat, too."

"That makes no sense at all, but okay." Just roll it with, try not to lose your mind on the minor details.

"I am in room 304." If for any strange reason Kathy wanted to pass by what was going to look like a really weird room, considering the two weird girls living in it.

"I spend a decent amount of time down on three," Kathy said. "Don't be surprised if I do come knocking. Besides, I'll feel less bad about rifling through your common room if I've visited someone on your floor first."

"I will leave the door open." It was up to Kaylin to close it if she wanted to. And then she remembered. "Sometimes I sleep outside, though." Depending on just how late she planed to show up.

"You're hardier than I am, then," Kathy said with an exaggerated shiver. "I'm a thin-blooded California girl. I'm not made for these East Coast winters."

Laura looked down, smiling a bit. "It is just habit and bad dreams." And that she didn't want to cut anyone if she woke up startled.

"You should check out the roof, then," Kathy suggested. "There's a garden up there and you'll be closer to the stars. And it doesn't get quite so many visitors during the winter." She pretended to shiver again. "And it's warmer than the preserve and closer to the showers when you decide to get up."

"I will", she said, and she would, because Laura was a sucker for high places. Something something, cat pun.

Had Laura been something closer to a normal teenager, she would have half-hugged Kathy. As it was, physical contact made her a bit nervous, because she was still bad at boundaries. "I do not get too cold or two hot. My body regulates its temperature depending of its needs."

Which is why she was always wearing somewhat revealing clothes, or her uniform.

Laura could join the collection of two-legged feral cats the island was amassing.

"Oh, I see," Kathy teased. "Just rub it in. I'm in the first stages of frostbite and you're fine. I see how it is. See if I share any more of these excellent..." She looked down at her empty plate. "...chip crumbs. So there."

"If you were in the first stages of frostbite I could just steal your chip crumbs," Laura said, matter-of-factly. But then she grinned- or what passed for Laura's grin. It would grow over time.

"After I make sure you are okay, of course."

"Rude," Kathy huffed in what would be a decent bit of acting if her dimples weren't quite so noticeable. "Though I appreciate you at least checking on me before making off with my poor chip crumbs."

"I am not", protested Laura, although there was no sign of protest in her voice. She was really bad at the whole teasing and acting, but she didn't feel judged for the first time in a good while. "Letting someone I want to befriend to froze to death seems counter-intuitive."

Laura then proceeded to put her cookie crumbs on top of Kathy's chip crumbs. Take it as a peace offering, Kathy.

"I appreciate you not letting me freeze all the way to death," Kathy declared. "That definitely wins you some points in the befriending column. But if you invite me to an outdoor slumber party in the middle of winter, I'm going to know it's all a ruse and show up sans chips."

"At least show up with something thick", Laura pointed. "I have camped in the snow in the past. It can be peaceful, but you might want to cover."

Little did Laura know she was going to be running naked with wolves in the future. In the middle of a snowstorm.

Yeah, Kathy was just gonna pass on that exciting field trip. Running naked with wolves sounded like a terrible idea in good weather.

"Oh, I'll find some way to rig a space heater if I had to," Kathy assured her. "But if I could suggest leaving the slumber party till the weather warms up, that'd be even better. Otherwise I'm just going to show up in this humongous sleeping bag and that's all anyone's going to see of me till it's time to go inside."

Considering how intimate of an experience that was going to be, Laura wouldn't be much into inviting people, so. It worked itself out.

"Okay." She was making plans for the future. Mock plans, but plans anyway. It felt so incredibly normal that Laura could barely keep her face schooled into its usual coolness. "We can go closer to the fire", she added a moment later. "If you are cold."

"If you don't mind?" Kathy asked. "More so we can be close to the rest of the food. I spend a ridiculous amount of time eating. My metabolism sped up the same time the rest of me did."

Laura dropped from the tree gracefully, touching the ground without making a sound and no discernible discomfort. This was the girl who jumped from several stories up to fall on her feet, break her ankles and walk away, so a puny tree wasn't going to disuade her.

"I want to try more of the food, too." She had stuck to pizza and cookies, so it was time to get adventurous.

Kathy did the same, landing almost silently at Laura's side. She routinely launched herself from rooftops, so, again, a puny tree wasn't going to stop her.

Besides. The food was waiting.

"Shall we?" she said. She would have linked arms and laughingly pulled her to the tables if she'd known Laura any better. "I'll introduce you to all the best food that's out here."
