Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Oopsie!

"Oooh," Mabel replied, knowingly. "Homework, but away from home. What kind of stuff? Is there anything I can help you with?"

"So to really stay at the top of your game with AirTrek, you have to do a thing called Tuning. And I kind of, um, haven't been? So my sisters made me do it while I was back, so I should be good for a bit?"

Ringo grinned. "But thanks for offering!" That was just like Mabel.

"Hey, any time," Mabel replied, grinning. "I am to please! Or, uh, assist. I'm pleased when I can help?"

Hooboy.

"I like helping!"

That would do.

Ringo giggled. "I might have noticed that about you. Once or twice."

"It helps that you're good at it, too!" She grinned. "Speaking of, done any really neat assisting recently?" Because, you know, Fandom offered up some pretty weird opportunities on occasion.

Mabel had to consider that one for a moment.

"Well, I did karaoke my heart out at the Christmas party the other week in order to save the island," Mabel offered. "It wouldn't even be the first time that karaoke has helped to save the day, either!"

There had been this one time, with zombies...

"Really?" Ringo laughed. "I didn't know that you were such a karaoke hero." How did you get so awesome, Mabel?

Natural, raw talent. Naturally.

"Oh, yeah! Karaoke is great against all kinds of things," she shared. "Apparently evil Christmas spirits and zombies are on that list. I'm working on figuring out what else it can be used against in moments of emergency."

"Good plan." Ringo's smile was a bit weaker than usual with memories of the spirits, but it was there. "This is Fandom, after all, right? You totally never know what you'll run into!"

Aww, Ringo. Mabel didn't mean to make you sad! Here, hug the pig for a moment. Mabel was picking him up and offering him your way.

"Right? It's not as bad as Gravity Falls - at least I've never had to deal with any gnomes outside of the Portalocity office - but it definitely keeps people on their toes!"

Thanks, Mabel. And Waddles.

"Gnomes?" Ringo asked curiously, snuggling Waddles for a moment. "What are those?"

"They're forest creatures," Mabel explained seriously, "about a foot tall, including their pointy hats. And they look like little bearded men who travel in packs and kidnap innocent young women away to marry them and make them their gnome queen."

There was a pause, and then she added, "They hate leaf blowers, though. Never travel into the woods without one."

That was a very specific description, Mabel.

"A leaf blower?" Ringo asked. She didn't think Mabel was suggesting that she always travel through the woods with a gnome handy.

"A leaf blower," Mabel agreed, nodding.

Gnomes could be useful too! You just had to know how to get them to cooperate!

"I keep mine under my bed."

...

"My leaf blower."

She'd gone out to pick one up the moment she'd learned about the Portalocity gnomes. Just in case.

"I, um, I don't have a leaf blower." Ringo sounded a little bit worried. Should she be worried, Mabel?

"It's okay," Mabel replied, reaching to give Ringo a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "We can get you one. And if not, gnomes can probably be reasoned with. Just don't let them all combine forces to become one giant super-gnome and you should be fine."

Ringo sighed in relief. "No letting gnomes combine into a super-gnome." She nodded seriously. "I can probably manage that, at least."

"Hey," Ringo said, suddenly frowning thoughtfully, "are there any other safety tips you should make sure to tell me?" Ringo didn't want to get caught unprepared, after all!

"When it comes to gnomes?" Oh, Mabel had a list. "They hate loud-pitched noises, but really like squirrels, so I'd suggest being careful if you see a squirrel and a gnome talking. And between you and me, I don't think other forest creatures take them very seriously. It's actually kind of sad."

"Well, about gnomes, but other things I should look out for. I mean, I never even knew I needed a leaf blower."

Oooh. Poor Ringo. Mabel was going to have to sit down and have a long talk, wasn't she?

"Oh, sure, though I'm not sure how many more of the things I'm familiar with have come here, too. Fandom has gremlins, Gravity Falls has gremloblins. Ghosts kind of happen everywhere, and I really, really hope that little creepy pushy rich magic-using kids don't happen here..."

The less said about Gideon, the better.

Ringo blinked. It was sounding like they needed to sit down and have a long talk, yes.

"How come you know so much, Mabel?" Was it your inherent awesomeness, again?

"Life experience," Mabel replied, solemnly. "Lots and lots of life experience."

That was even actually true.

"Sounds like you've had a way more interesting life than me," Ringo sighed.

"Nah," Mabel replied, waving a dismissive hand. "Just one really, really interesting summer."

Half summer? Most of a summer? There were bits and pieces that she couldn't remember, still. Like the whole end of it. But that would come in time. She had faith.

"I wish I could have been there," Ringo sighed. Her most interesting had just involved one secret space elevator. So, you know, boring.

And probably if Mabel thought about it, she'd remember by the end of the year. Hopefully.

If Mabel thought really, really hard about it, she might start actually remembering by mid-February!

For some reason!

"Well, maybe I'll take you there to visit someday," she decided. "Gravity Falls is a pretty interesting place."
