Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You say that like it's reassuring," Anders said lightly, but some of the concern fell from his eyes. "Oh, I was meaning to ask -- did you run into any trouble when things got strange a few weeks back? It wasn't too bad for me."

Other than the weird dreams and a few clashes with giant spiders, and Anders could have those at home.

"I didn't," Nathan said, shaking his head. He'd heard about it but he hadn't really witnessed anything or been exposed to anything terrible. "I spent a lot of it off island, actually. Must have gotten lucky."

"You didn't miss anything important," Anders told him. "There were somethings to fight but nothing we couldn't handle. And then there was a party at the end for ... some reason."

He still half thought radio had been kidding about that.

"To celebrate the victory?" Nathan guessed. "Or just...a really badly timed party?"

"I think it was part of the victory?" Anders said,crinkling his nose. "That's what radio said,anyhow. I never know how seriously to take it."

"Huh." Nathan thought about that and then just stopped thinking about it because it made no sense. "Was it fun?"

"It was all right," Anders decided. "Honestly I didn't stay long. There was a lot of Christmas stuff."

"Yeah, I kind of avoided doing much for that," Nathan said, shrugging. Christmas hadn't ever been that important to his family and he didn't have many things to be thankful for. "I can't remember the last time I celebrated any holiday when I wasn't here."

"They're never my holidays," Anders said, shrugging back. "I have could tried to do something for First Day, but it's almost exactly the same as New Years' anyhow."

"We never had the money to do Christmas or birthdays," he sighed, tucking his hands into his pockets. "My mom probably would have liked to do things like that if she hadn't died. Or maybe not. Sometimes we saw fireworks for the new year if we were lucky."

"We had nice holidays when I was with my parents," Anders noted. "But in the circle it was an extra Chantry service and a piece of cake after supper."

"But hey, you got cake," Nathan teased lightly. "Can't really go wrong with cake, right? Unless it was really terrible, I guess."

"They didn't figure out how to make cake terrible," Anders said, smiling a bit. "They weren't complete monsters."

"Good to hear," Nathan said quietly. "Plans for this semester? Taking any good classes?"

"Only two this time," Anders answered. "Surviving in the field with Rand and something about international travel. What did you go for?"

"Physical education and something about going around the world," Nathan recalled. "Figured I'd be all right at the first one and bloody terrible with the second."

"Why, what do you think is going to go wrong in the around the world one?" Anders asked. "You're pretty good with directions and all of that."

"Maybe but I'm not very good with other areas of the world," he said, shrugging. "I can figure out where to go but I've only put that into practice in a few places. Not the world."
