Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Picnic-ing in January - still not the best idea ever! But there were tables and chairs set up in the sun, and a nice bonfire going, and plenty of warm food for everyone to encourage socializing for as long as possible.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Raven tottered about the lawn, totally comfortable in her insanely impractical six inch heels. So far so good. No one had shrieked her name and screamed that she was evil. She was going to really miss Maddie and Cerise and her friends back at Ever After High, but it was nice to make a fresh start with no pressure about her so-called destiny.

"Well hello."

This girl looked like she could've easily been Coterie. Also, she was pretty and Ezra was shallow. Of course he had to come sniff around.

(Metaphorically.)

(Well, literally as well, but he wasn't obvious about that. Sort of just went with being a fox.)

He smiled. "You look shiny and new."

Raven had always pushed thoughts of boys aside for the most part, wanting to concentrate instead on figuring out what she was going to do with her life. But this boy's smile made her feel a little weak in the knees.

"Hi!" she said, hoping she wasn't blushing. "Does it show that much? I am new. And I'm Raven."

"Ezra," he replied, smoothly offering her his hand. Seemed like the right thing to do. And his smile was just a little bit like a smirk. A little bit. "Welcome to Fandom, Raven. Enjoying it so far? Because I can tell you, we're already enjoying having you here."

Raven held out her hand in return. Something about Ezra reminded her of Daring Charming, in a way.

"I am, yes," she said. "It's not too different from my old school. Just less...magicy."

"Less magicky?"

Now there was a thought. Ezra's head tilted even as he shook her hand. The contact lingered.

"You don't hear that often here."

Raven giggled. And not because he was still holding her hand, really.

"Ever After High is one of the most magical places in the whole world," she said. "It's hard to imagine any place would have as much magic as it does. But some people here know how to use it, right?"

"Up to and including the island itself, it seems," Ezra replied. He bent down and gave the back of her hand a feather-light kiss before finally releasing it. "Not me, though. Well, not that kind of magic, anyway."

It had not taken him long at all to break out the innuendo.

Focus, Raven, focus!

"The, uh, island is magic?" she said, pulling her hand back and pressing it to her chest. "And what kind of different magic can you do?"

Innuendo was unfortunately not one of the languages she knew.

Oh, stick around Ezra for a while and you'd learn, Raven.

"The island seems to be magic, yes," he said. "Or at the very least, very very weird." That was one way to put it. "As for me, well, my magic is more of a private kind."

"I can't wait to learn more," Raven said. "About the island I mean. And other people's magic. I hope I can learn how to use my magic differently."

Meaning not in an evil way.

She cocked her head curiously at Ezra. "Well, if it's private I won't ask you to show me, unless you want to."

"It might be too forward of me," Ezra said with a light little smirk that still had something of is natural vulpine nature to it. "It's more of a bedroom kind of magic. Most of the time. Not always."

"Oh. Oh!" Raven finally understood what Ezra had been hinting toward. She blushed, unused to being flirted with. Most boys screamed and ran the other way.

"I see," she said, regaining her composure, well, a little of it. "I, um, thank you, but...."

"Nice shoes." Kathy had only come to appreciate heels recently, but anyone willing to sport them at a winter picnic--without falling!--deserved acclaim and respect.

Kathy would love Ever After High, then. The girls there were practically born in these kind of shoes.

"Thanks!" she said. "Aren't they just amazing? And hi, I'm Raven."

There were a hundred reasons Kathy would love Ever After High, let's be real here.

"They're gorgeous," Kathy said. "Now I'm sorry I decided to wear snow boots instead." Except that her toes were so nice and toasty in them and her two pairs of woolen socks. "I'm Kathy, hi! Welcome to Fandom. Probably everything you've heard so far is true."

"I haven't heard too much yet," Raven admitted. "My roommate told me that Fandom is the center of many different sorts of realms. And the portals are like our wells."

"That's one way to put it, yeah," Kathy said. "I think it also warps causality in some way, but I don't have enough physics under my belt to prove it." She tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled. "But nattering on about string theory and quantum mechanics is probably just going to make everything even more confusing. I take it wells are your world's way of traveling from one place to another?"

Kathy was absolutely correct; Raven wasn't quite following what she was saying. "Quantum...mechanics?" she repeated slowly. "I'm not sure what that is. But wells are one way, yes. Or another kind of magic."

"Quantum mechanics is study of how matter and energy interact on a sub-atomic scale," Kathy explained helpfully. 'Helpfully.' "Regular physics helps us understand and describe the natural world around us that we deal with on an every day basis. Quantum physics does the same thing, just on a scale so small that it's hard to comprehend. When matter and energy get very small, the rules as we understand them change."

And then Kathy realized she was babbling again. "Of course, since you just mentioned magic, it's entirely possible that things don't work like that in the reality you're used to. Sorry. I was studying before I came down for the picnic, so my brain's kind of focused on that right now."

"I know all about magic," Raven said brightly, hoping that none of her classes at Fandom High had "quantum" or "physics" in the title.

"Well, not all," she clarified. "I'm still learning it. I can do a lot of spells, but sometimes they backfire a little on me."

Oh, you didn't have to worry about that, Raven. Anything with quantum or physics in the title was probably too academic for the school. Kathy had to take extra classes elsewhere for this.

"And I don't know anything about magic," she said. "Do you have a wand or do you speak spells or do you have to put things into a cauldron to make potions, or...?"

Maybe Raven could explain how a rhyming couplet and an eye of newt were supposed to accomplish anything.

Raven laughed. "No, no wand, but some people like to use them to focus. And if it's a simple spell I don't have to say anything. Really powerful ones might have certain words you need to say, though."

And yes, rhyming. Always rhyming.

Which made total sense. Sure.

"Why? How?" Kathy asked. "I confused you with quantum theory for a little while--I wouldn't mind at all if you wanted to do the same with me about magic."

"Oh, sure!" Raven said. "What room are you in? Mine is 212. My roommate's Lucille, but she's a little...distant."
