Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of ~~moddable~~ warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

And Hardison would replace all of Eliot's pants with skinny jeans.

"I thought you wanted to take a picture," Hardison said, picture of innocence.

Eliot turned the phone around and took an actually decently framed photo of Hardison in his party hats using selfie mode. The man could operate a sniper rifle. He knew how sight lines and lenses worked.

"I think I'll email this to Nana. Since you get mad when I call her and all."

"Don't get mad it's just...unsettlin'," Hardison grumbled. While smiling because Eliot would send this to Nana, he just would. "You don't see me callin' up Trudy an' talkin' about...whatever you an' Nana talk about."

Eliot looked up from where he was poking at the phone, trying to remember how to attach a picture to an email. "You could, you know," he said. "I mean, I know you haven't met and all, but I bet she'd like that."

It was a good thing he wasn't taking the picture now, or he'd've caught Hardison in mid-flail. "I--I could? What would we even talk about! Hell, you don't get me most of the time an' you known me for goin' on eight years now!"

And then, more quietly, he added, "...You really think she would?"

"Yeah, 'cause me and your nana have so much in common." They actually kind of did. But Eliot was Not Thinking About That. "You kidding? She's been on my ass to bring you two down and meet her and her kids since last May. A chance to even sort of meet you on the phone? Not randomly in the background on a skype screen? She'd be all over it."

"Uhh, you do? And that's why it's kinda weird?" Hardison didn't want to explore too deeply into why he'd be head over heels for a guy who reminded him of his foster mother sometimes. "You think I should just...call her outta the blue, then? You ain't worried she'll freak out an' assume somethin' happened to you?"

"Doubt she'll freak out. She's used to not knowin' how I'm doing." The fact that Trudy used to only have flowers on their mother's grave once a year to go by that Eliot was still alive probably wasn't as great an argument for her not freaking out as Eliot thought it was. "Or, I dunno, I could call and hand you the phone, if you want. It ain't that big a deal."

It was a tremendous deal.

"Yeah, that would feel a lot less weird than me randomly pickin' up the phone one day an' just callin' her," Hardison said, looking immediately relieved. "But, like, if you were talkin' an' then had to go do somethin' real quick an' just handed the phone over until you were done..."

Yes, Hardison was spinning a con in order to talk on the phone to Eliot's sister. So?

Yeah, Eliot noticed that. He smirked. "Or, you know, I could call and say 'hey, my partner wants to meet you' and hand the phone over."

Hardison knew how Eliot felt about conning your own people.

"Yeah, but then it's so...fraught! Like, it's all...meetin' the family and everything."

Hardison had anxiety over meeting people he desperately wanted the approval of.

"And fakin' like it's casual makes it not fraught?"

"Obviously," Hardison said. "I wouldn'ta suggested it otherwise."

"Y'realize that doesn't make any sense, right?"

"Nah, nah, see, rather than anyone startin' to freak out about, like, expectations or whatever a' tryna come up with conversation, we get to both be aggravated at you an' talk about how inconsiderate you're bein' and BAM! Suddenly we been talkin' for twenty minutes and we're the best of friends!"

How did that not make sense, Eliot?

"How has no one killed you yet?"

That was just mean, Eliot.

Don't be mad just because you couldn't keep up with him.

"I ain't sure, but I'm pretty sure it's cause I'm smart enough to hide behind you?"

"Yeah, that ain't gonna work with Trudy," Eliot said. "And neither is tryin' to con her. She's canny."

Hardison mumbled something uncomplimentary about Spencer genes under his breath.

"Meetin' Nana was easier," he grumbled. "We had a con to keep us occupied an' not freakin' out."
