Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of moddable warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I've only told you a little bit so far. Trust me. It gets weirder," Skaar said. "I'll probably explain it more later on."

There was still the alien thing and the warlord thing and the teaming with his unpowered father to train to murder the fully powered version of his father, and his ability to control the planet through an ancient force within the Earth itself.... But that was Advanced Skaar Studies.

It was okay. You had to be a certain level to unlock parts of Velma's backstory, too.

"Gives us something to look forward to," she said. "Roommate goals."

Of course, Velma's only real roommate goal was to make sure that this ended better than things did with her last roommate. She'd been pretty busted up when Yele--when Sparkle Bright had flung her into the locker room wall. She didn't think she'd survive if Skaar decided to do the same.

Skaar probably also wasn't going to hook up with her boyfriend at Marketing's behest, either, so this really was looking better than her last situation.

"Have you ever had a roommate before? I did, a few years back."

It depending on how exactly Marketing pitched it, in theory, but it was pretty unlikely.

"None close to my age," which was poorly defined due to being an alien hybrid gamma monster, and trying to find the corresponding Earth age to his stage of development. "I've been in tight quarters with my family and with other groups back home, but nothing like this."

"I probably snore when I do sleep."

It would be all the harder since Velma didn't see dating looming large in her future in roughly...ever. She was still hung up on Aaron and knew it.

"Invest in earplugs, got it," Velma said. "Uhh, do you want us to rig up some kind of modesty curtain or anything?"

Much of Velma's modesty had been eroded by years of locker room changes and injuries that sometimes made getting the costume off in a hurry a higher imperative than protecting her dignity. So long as Skaar didn't actively watch her get changed, she was fine. But whether the same went for him was another story.

Hey, he could be really modest under than loincloth!

Skaar had literally never been in a situation where his modesty required consideration. "I don't think there will be a problem, but we can put one up in case it feels weird."

And maybe liberal use of a modesty curtain could allow him to transform to his smaller form from time to time without presenting himself as a potential target. He didn't particularly need to transform, but real deep rest now and then was a good thing.

If he ever did shift, it was entirely possible he'd wake up to several toys standing guard over him. Out of habit, more than anything else, countless drills of never leave a weakened team member undefended.

"We can try it for a few days and see?" Velma suggested. "I'm pretty sure it'll be fine on my end, but the only roommate I ever had was a girl, so it might end up being different than I remember."

And they'd both been prepubescent at the time, too.

"I'll also try to keep my stuff off of your side. I'm kinda messy, but that's what the plushies are for."

"Don't worry about that. I don't keep things besides weapons, so my side will be empty anyway," Skaar said. "A space in the school's weapon's locker has my name on it, though."

"...This school has a weapons locker?"

"I was told I have to drop my sword off there," Skaar explained. "I'm guessing I'm not the only person here who likes to be armed."

Like he really NEEDED to be armed. Even worse, hiis sword was bigger than several of their classmates.

"And my last public school had metal detectors everywhere," Velma said with a low whistle. "They have a system so nobody else can get at your weapons, right?" She eyed him. "Assuming anyone could lift the sword you've got, I mean."

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2016]

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably. But the best system is my system. Anyone who takes me sword has to deal with me taking it back," Skaar said. Vowed. It was more of a vow. "The same goes for any axes I end up with."

Velma immediately put her hands up. "Did I mention I don't really know how to use most melee weapons?" she asked. She was smiling, so odds were good she wasn't actually intimidated.

Even if she had privately swore to never touch his sword, just in case.

"I let my toys do all my fighting for me. Not that I plan to do any of that anymore either. Like I said, I'm retired."

"In that case, if you ever need a hand, let me know," Skaar said. "I'm good at diffusing situations fast."

"Yeah, I can see where everyone in the room is inclined to calm the hell down when you walk in," Velma said nodding. It would be weird, calling on someone to take care of a situation for her, but the appeal of not putting herself in front of every calamity wearing spandex and bunny ears was undeniable. "You up for traveling, too? I would love to unleash you on Scaredy the next time Halloween decides to play tricks."

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know what most of that meant, but it's possible," Skaar said. "Is Halloween the holiday or a person?"

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Spring 2016]

[identity profile] fckedupx5000.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Uhhh, yes?" Velma said, scratching her head. "Okay, so your world doesn't have the Seasonal Lands. Good to know. Umm, so the Seasonal Lands are a kind of parallel dimension to ours. There are four, one for each season. And in each Seasonal Land dwells that season's holidays and various Spirits of the Seasons. No one's really clear on how much they influence us and we influence them, but there's a lot of give and take there. So, in Autumn, Halloween is kind of the focal point? Because it's the part of autumn that we've invested the most thought and energy and power into."

She checked to see if he was with her so far. "The Spirits of the Season who belong to Halloween are the strongest of all the Season's Avatars. And a couple of them have decided that anytime they have a problem, the best solution is to have me solve it. So every so often, I wake up in Halloween, with Hailey, the Halloween Princess, and Scaredy, who used to be a big deal and is now her minion, I guess, standing over me."

Which was never normal, no matter how often it happened.

"So I'd just be intimidating at Scaredy? Or would I get to punch Scaredy?" Skaar knew which one he would prefer, but he was open to either depending on how Velma actually felt on the topic..

Velma looked almost comically grumpy. "Punch away," she grumbled. "Wait, no. Threaten him once and then punish him."

"Can do," Skaar said. He wouldn't say no to scaring and punching spirits. He disliked spirits. They were asking for it.

"I like you," Velma declared. "You might just be my favorite roommate."

Again, Yelena had been disqualified due to her trying to kill Velma and then sleeping with her boyfriend so it wasn't exactly a crowded field, but anybody who was willing to punch out a denizen of Halloween was all right with her.

"I should probably point out that he's probably tremendously strong, even though he looks like a six-year-old," she added. "He's got all the power of the holiday to draw on."

In case Skaar wanted to rethink his offer.

[identity profile] oldstrongest1.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm stronger," Skaar declared. He actually couldn't guarantee that. He didn't think he could access the Old Power in an alternate dimension, but he felt that the odds were still in his favor just with his Hulk strength.

[identity profile] fckedupx5000.livejournal.com 2016-01-03 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Scaredy said that his power had waned, so Velma would give Skaar decent odds on being able to take him out. But she wouldn't let him tangle with Hailey on her behalf. Or at all. To mess with the Halloween Princess would be to incur the wrath of the entire holiday.

"And if you ever need..." Velma tried to think of what she could do help Skaar out. "Stuff fetched for you and you don't want to go yourself? Your bed made? Clothes put away?"

Drawing a blank here.

"Get enough of them and they might be able to get my sword if I'm in a hurry," Skaar offered.

"Ants." Velma said after a second of thought. "Let me get some plastic ants. They can lift up to something like twenty times their own body weight and are comparatively as fast as racehorses."

She paused.

"Or I guess I could just use horses."

She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a little green army man. At her touch it woke up, immediately saluting her, then aiming its rifle at Skaar.

"At ease, soldier," Velma said and the soldier snapped into parade rest, the rifle butt tucked against his shoulder. "I need you to run off and see if there are any stores on the island that sell toy ponies. Or ants, I guess. Come back and report to me when you find some or if you run out of stores."

"At once, ma'am!" the soldier snapped a salute and then jumped from Velma's palm, a parachute no bigger than a handkerchief slowing his descent.

Velma didn't pay him any more mind after he jumped, turning back to Skaar. "I think this is doable," she said.
