Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of moddable warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

When are you from?

Good thing Laura had already suffered through time traveling shenanigans. "Hope Summers has returned to the present. Nothing seems more significant than that at the moment."

"Ok- huh," Kitty said, frowning. "That hasn't happened for me, so I'm guessing we're a different universe thing. Good to know."

"Different universes?" Different timelines, maybe, but universes? "Alternate realities?" Did she miss something on the pamphlet? She totally missed something in the pamphlet.

"It might still happen, though." It was supposed to be a good thing. "She is supposed to restart the mutant population. Somehow." Don't ask her the details, she was just glad Hope was alive and well.

Kitty crossed her fingers, because really.

"Sorry if I'm totally throwing you off here," she said, since she knew how weird the first day here could get.

Yeah, that would be interesting to live through. Hope was still a ways from scaring everyone and back though. Laura could wait.

"It is okay", Laura said. She was good on her feet. "Then it is safe to assume you are not here to bring me back." Double checking, you know.

"Nope. ...Did you run off?" Of course she had to ask that now.

Of course she had to. "I left. It is a matter of time someone might come looking."

Gambit though, she won't see that one coming. "I just needed some time away."

"Trust me, I get that." She'd only left oh, about three times now. "I'm not going to send you back. If you need time, you need time."

Laura nodded quietly. "Thanks." She knew she could trust Kitty. Maybe it was because of the X-Man she was among the youngest, but also because she hadn't been there when she had left.

Still... "How did you end living here?" It seemed like a stretch.

"It's kind of a long story," she said. "I needed time away, found this place, then made friends and met a guy and never really left. Sometimes I go up and back between here and Westchester, but right now I'm here full time."

"I suppose it can happen." Making friends, meeting a guy, it happened. Didn't happen to her, but to other people, sure. Why not.

A moment later. "You're not a student here." Not a question, really.

"Teacher. Computer science," she nodded.

"Computer science."

...waitaminute.

"I signed to a computer science class." Oh, well.

"Oh. Well then class introductions should be really easy for you," Kitty grinned.

Laura somehow managed to sulk even harder. "I doubt it." She didn't even know how she was going to deal with other teenagers. Her limited experience had been a bit jarring.

"You'll be fine," Kitty told her. "This place is really pretty easy, in general."

"In general." If anything, there was one class she wasn't going to have a decidedly bad time on.

"I heard about the... weirdness."

"It's a thing," Kitty nodded. "You get used to it. The people make up for a lot of it."

"I see." While Laura wasn't too sure she was a people person by any stretch of the word, she did know that good company was necessary to... well, change. Improve oneself. She didn't wish her particular brand of broken to anyone, though. "I hope so."
