Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Okay, admittedly, having a picnic at the beginning of January wasn't the best idea the school had ever come up with. Thankfully, the weather was sort of agreeable today - it wasn't too chilly, the sun was out, and there were still pretty pockets of unmelted snow on the lawn.

In the middle of the lawn, a bonfire had been set up for warmth and light--mostly the warmth--and the tables and chairs had been set out to mostly be in the sun. There was a long table with a variety of ~~moddable~~ warm foods, and there was the usual table of nametags and lists to help folks find their siblings and roommates. With everything set up, it was time to welcome the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"We were guests the first couple of days," Atton retorted. "Then they turned out to be bad guys. It happens!"

She rolled her eyes.

"How are you still alive?"

Just in general. Not related to this particular event.

"The Force doesn't want me dead, apparently," Atton said. "Or I don't want me dead. I don't know; I've had a whole bunch of pretentious people mumbo-jumbo at me about it."

"Well, whatever works." Not that she cared. "Haven't seen you since you were a dodgy Frenchman, anyway."

"Ugh," Atton groaned. "Don't remind me of that. That guy was weird."

... less dodgy in reality than Atton himself, but still.

"Weirder than you?"

She was a jerk.

"He was French."

A nationality Atton only knew about in passing, but still.

"And you're space Canadian." Deal with it. "'S not that much better when you get right down to it, sweetcheeks."

"Aren't the French the ones that make those weird cheeses that smell like feet?" Atton retorted. "Because my people don't do that."

Snort. "Maybe you don't need to because your feet smell enough on their own?"

Atton squinted at her. "If you've been smelling my feet," he said, "I suddenly have so many questions."

So much eye rolling.

"That was an insult to your people, pillock. Way to take the fun out of it."

"Maybe you should think about that, next time you go for the cheap ones," Atton retorted. "Up your sarcasm game."

He nodded at a random newbie. "There's a practice target."

"Ugh." Her power of communication was very limited today. "I'll see you around."

"I meant you could snark at them from a distance with me," Atton said, shrugging one shoulder. "But hey, if you think you can get a better deal than sarcasm from the sidelines and maybe some dinner later somewhere else..."

Look, it had been a really shitty week. Sarah being an asshole might actually brighten his day.

"Are you asking me out?" she retorted. "Is this a date, Atton?"

She knew it wasn't; this was Sarah being an asshole. It was always easiest to use that to cover up a misunderstanding.

Atton rolled his eyes. "One, way to make that sound like an accusation," he said, "and two, I did not use the word 'date' in there even once."

"Well I wouldn't have fucking asked if you had, now would I?" she replied, amused. "'S why people generally ask, space boy."

"It's just a meal," Atton said, "With a friend who's got no trouble being a terrible person along with me. Okay?"

And maybe he'd have snuck innuendo in there if his left arm was at all functional at the moment, but ahahaha, no.

Sarah pretended to think about it for a second. "Okay, I'll take it," she decided. As if she'd had any better things to do today. She looked privately amused at something, though. "Decent enough use of a day."

"Effusive," Atton said. "I'll take it."

"But you called me your friend," Sarah replied, like that was something to make fun of him for. (Look she couldn't bloody well act pleased, could she?) "Sentimental twerp."

"Why do I even talk to you people?" Atton asked. Rhetorically.

It was a question he had asked many, many times.

"We just covered why."

Wait for it.

"Because you're a sentimental twerp."

She was going to let it go now. Honest.

"I'm just doing this because you have a nice rack, all right?"

Liar.
