[The Final Job]
Hardison was bouncing on his toes when the class entered into the Danger Shop today. The final was bringing him right back to his childhood and it was amazing. Of course, it was possible that they might not notice their teachers, not when the Danger Shop itself was transformed into aheavily bastardized version of a Mayan Temple, complete with talking stone head. Granted, this head bore more than a passing resemblance to Eliot at his scowliest.
"Sup, class!" Hardison said, grinning. "Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple"
Eliot was not helping that resemblance in the least with the way he was scowling at the talking stone head. Any moment now, he'd notice that fact, try not to scowl, and make that comparison even better. "Welcome to your final." Growl that harder, Eliot. Someone might be under the impression that you enjoy teaching.
Parker was now giggling a lot, and glancing between Eliot and Mr. Talking Head. “You need to cross the gorge, solve the secret of the hieroglyphics, assemble a Mayan calendar, and build Chichen Itza. Teamwork is the only thing that will get you inside.”
His name was Olmec, Parker! And he knew all the very best legends!
...Hardison had really liked this show growing up, okay? And would have kicked butt at the trivia section. Maybe not the other parts that had involved running and climbing and stuff, but definitely the trivia part.
"So apparently this . . . thing. . . ." that Eliot was still having a scowling contest with, "tells stories." Eliot was thoroughly unimpressed by this. "Or something."
"Or something," agreed Olmec, making Eliot jump back just a little and scowl even harder as it launched into a tragic Mayan legend about doomed love.
“I don’t think I would ever wear a beetle,” was Parker’s commentary on that.
"Killin' the romance, mama," Hardison mumbled, before loudly adding, "The golden beetle of legend is hidden in one of the rooms in the Temple."
"The beetle is in the Observatory!" Olmec boomed, a spotlight illuminating a room up on the top 'floor' of the Temple.
"Right," Hardison agreed. "So the winners are the first team that makes it up to the Observatory an' back out again with the beetle, hitting the gong to show they're done.."
"It ain't as easy as it sounds," Eliot said, still side-eying Olmec like crazy. "That thing is damned creepy," he muttered to Hardison.
"Aww, but it looks just like you!"
"IT'S A GIANT FACE MADE OF STONE." Eliot clearly didn't think much of that comparison, no.

And Into the Temple!
"You could start by running to the Room of the Three Gargoyles. Push in the right tongue and a door might lead you down a staircase into the Wall Climb. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the Observatory, spin the sundial, and pass into the Room of the Golden Idols. Once there, push down on their bases to release the doors. That may take you below or lead you into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue there, and you may be headed for the Torch Room. If the elevator is up, you could jump into the elevator and descend into the Mine Shaft. You might climb up the ladder, or plow through the Stone Wall. Find the key and it may unlock the Tombs of the Ancient Kings, allowing you to climb into the Spider's Lair. If you escape, you may have a chance to sit upon the Throne of the Pretender. If the correct door is unlocked, you'll be able to crawl into the Pit of Despair and finally make your way through the Cave of Sighs back to the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone. Good luck."
Of course, some of the doors are locked and will remain so until you have the beetle in hand, so don't expect a straight run right to the observatory!
