Creative Inspirations | Monday, period one

//Finals week,// Jono said, hands on his hips and a pleased look on his face. //And we managed to get through a whole semester of classes with no horrible disasters or students getting terribly drunk somewhere around the end of the universe. I'd say that's a cause for celebration, but I'd really much rather get this final over with so I can stop pretending to be a functional adult and half-decent role model for a while.//

Jono told it like it was, okay?

Hannibal was as cool and unflappable as always, but then, he'd been that even faced with students getting terribly drunk around the end of the universe. Well, student. Edward. "So, today as promised, you exhibit your art - whatever form it may take - to the rest of the school. As it's so nice out, we'll be doing this on the lawn." They might as well make use of the warmth while they had it.

//We'll let you poke through whatever pieces you did throughout the semester that you'd like to showcase,// Jono shared. //If you need an instrument of some sort, let us know, and we'll do what we can. You might have to get by without a grand piano, but I have faith that you can manage with whatever we can carry from the music room.//

"We'll also be choosing our favorite pieces of yours, should they not be among your favorites," Hannibal said, smiling. "We've seen many lovely things over the weeks, and would hate for others to miss out."

//Sometimes, something that you think is little more than a throwaway sketch catches a crowd's eye more easily than a masterpiece that you've spent months on,// Jono noted. //You might be surprised by the reception you get for something you created, and then didn't so much as think about afterwards.//

Hannibal rarely was, but then his art often had other reasons for appreciation. Or at least, catching eyes.

Ponder what pieces you'd like to showcase! Some music? Some finger painting? One of a dozen canvases covered in white paint?

Maria was listening to the lecture and wondering which of her musical pieces that she would feel was good enough for her to play on display.

For the showing off of the best of your best!

Or for admiring it!

Dante wasn't an artist. Not even close. But still-- there'd been sixteen weeks of class, and it'd led to a whole bunch of amateurish, anger-filled paintings of fire, blood, demons, jagged gates and the rest of the funhouse imagery of Limbo - all of which Dante had covered up behind a thick layer of white paint.

He thought.

As he'd been going through them, he found out almost half of them had a faint white sheen, but the images behind them was still largely present. "The fuck," he muttered.

Finally he grabbed the only one he hadn't tried to cover up - a poster of Bob Barbas he'd nabbed during one of his more recent jaunts back home, where he'd doodled an arrow through the guy's head - pinned that to an empty canvas and put it up.

Fucking weird, the other ones. Was gonna have to set fire to that or something.

It was amazing how opaque some forms of glaze looked before they dried.

Particularly when you had the multiverse to shop for them.

Hannibal took his time admiring the paintings, mostly for the raw emotion behind them, then chose a particularly angry red painting and one that suggested the form of wings and set them both beside the poster.

Dante didn't actually notice he'd done that until class was nearly over; he shot a glare in Hannibal's direction, stuck the paintings behind the poster, and then retreated to a corner with a cigarette to do his best laid-back glowering chimney impression.

This is why it paid to listen to the lecture, Dante.

Hannibal let him hide them - after all, most anybody who was going to see them had already - and came over to stand just upwind of him. "You're not fond of those?"

Dante rolled his eyes. (Well, at least Hannibal hadn't told him to kill the cigarette yet. There was that.) "Nah, was saving them for a museum exhibit."

If Dante wanted to kill his lungs, that was hardly Hannibal's problem. So long as he kept it away from others.

"I would think this would be a good first step toward that," Hannibal said. "Learning what your audience enjoys. Or what they're willing to pay for, depending upon your interests."

Hannibal was in the "art for art's sake" camp, but whatever made you happy.

Dante would've answered that he was pretty sure the demons would get him decades before the lung cancer did. A couple of years from now, he might've also pointed out that he was actually completely impervious to human disease.

But it hadn't come up, so that wasn't important.

Dante shot him some amused side-eye. "I mean this class has been great with the hour-long vacations and everything," he said, "But I'm leaving art to the professionals." He made a little finger gun and pointed it at Hannibal.

Hannibal chuckled and took a little bow.

"You might be surprised at the reception you'd get at an actual art exhibit, but that wasn't the point of this class, either," he said. "Only to show you that inspiration comes in many forms. And to give us an excuse to travel."

"Yeah, well, I didn't sign on to be part of any kinda art exhibit," Dante said. "Ready to frame this class on the wall somewhere it can pick up dust."

And burn those paintings. Seriously.

Hannibal shrugged. "That is of course your prerogative. I won't be seeing you in cooking class next term, then?"

Come on, Dante - it would be a challenge!

"I dunno," Dante said. "You makin' pizza?"

Never mind that he was still kind of pissed off about the painting thing.

"I teach mostly techniques; I make and serve food using them, and what you make with them is somewhat flexible. We did however learn about tomato sauce, as well as knives, and wine and beer pairings."

With appropriate tastings.

"That depends upon how well your digestive tract works." Meet Hannibal's classiness.

"The object of the class is to teach enough that those who want to cook classy foods can, and those who don't can avoid burning what they do cook."

Re: Showcase!

Hannibal's classiness got a snicker, at least.

"Maybe I like burning shit," Dante said. "Sounds like a lot of work for food."

"Art can often take a bit of effort," Hannibal pointed out. "But food is art you get to eat when it's done."

Re: Showcase!

"If you need me to come over and eat the art, I'll be happy to," Dante said, shrugging. "I don't like having to wait for the payoff."

Re: Showcase!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-12-14 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Hannibal laughed. "A dangerous proposition - I never mind feeding people. Teaching them to cook is largely an excuse to do so. I expect everyone to do the work, but I feed them from the start."

He shrugged. "Whether you feel yourself up to the challenge is of course something only you can say."

Dante held his hands up. "You gonna drag out people's ten-week-old food to show off, too?" he asked. "Because that might be a dealbreaker."

Cosette didn't consider herself a showoff exactly, but as it turned out she actually enjoyed a bit of the spotlight. And frankly, she'd have been content to sit out on the lawn with a keyboard and play for the entire day.

Re: Showcase!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-12-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Hannibal smiled and nodded. "I hope we've inspired you to find more beauty in your playing, and perhaps some songs of your own, Mademoiselle?"

Re: Showcase!

[personal profile] wildandbrave 2015-12-15 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, very much so," Cosette said, looking up from the keyboard without stopping. "It's different, you know, than me only practicing the same songs I already know, the way they're supposed to be played."

Shannon: Oh god, letting other people pick what gets showcased is like looking over your decade-old DeviantArt gallery around insanely talented coworkers and having them point at something you THOUGHT you had put into storage (the art locker of SHAME) years ago and say they like THAT the best. Not that this is a personal experience I have had in the last, oh, week or anything.

Llwy: But if you want a specific thing for the teachers to have picked, feel free to ping down here and let us know! Standard work SP warning applies.
