Creature Languages, 3/13, Period 2

The DVD player has been set up at the front of the room, and a stack of handouts sits on the table up front, along with coffee, juice and breakfast pastries.

"Hello. I hope you all had pleasant breaks.

We will concentrate on non-mammalian languages for this half of the semester, beginning with birds. There is a documentary in the DVD player; we are watching the episode, "Signals and Songs".

In addition, study the handout about the raven. It will help prepare you for our lecturer on Thursday."

Pippi watches the DVD with interest.

Walter leans over to Pippi and whispers, "If we're focusing on non-mammaliam languages now, does that mean that dragons are mammals?"

"What about spiders?" Blair whispered.

Victor wasn't sure what to say to that one, so he shrugged.

"I think it's best not to try and label dragons into any sort of catigory other then 'Dragon'... They seem a sensative lot... But I agree they seem more avian then mamaillian to me."

"Good point." Walter made a face and went back to watching the demonstration of how most bird song is actually a way of saying, F--- off out of here! You young sparrows, get a haircut! I know your Dad!

"I may never wake to the sound of birds chirping outside my window in quite the same way again," he muttered.

Victor giggled a little at that.

No, he wasn't thinking of the morning after his birthday. It was about something innocent, like baboons.

Had Walter known what Victor was thinking about (innocent baboons, of course,) he might have smirked at his boyfriend.

Instead, he focused on the terribly interesting show on the television and wondered if their guest lecturer would be pleased or irritated by recitations of Poe's poem.

Isn't it cute when boyfriends are on the same wavelength?

"I don't think Poe really knew how to speak bird. It's more like Quothe the Raven: Eat my shorts."

Pippi giggles at Victor's observation and seems to remember something.

"Pssst!" she psssts at Victor and hands Mr. Neilson a DVD wrapped in silver paper (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009S4IHY/).

"Happy belated birthday!" she whispers as Mr. Neilson skitters over to Victor with the present and presents it with a tip of his hat.

"Thank you, Mr. Neilson," Victor wispered, and quietly opeed the package.

He beamed at Pippi. "Thanks."

Pippi beamed back and gave Victor a thumbs up.

Pippi nodded.

"I was conserned it would all be about updrafts and airspeed. This is slightly more interesting."

"A lot of 'my beak is bigger than yours,' it seems," Walter agreed with a snicker. "I thought that was limited to humans.

"Things generally come down to sex." Pippi agreed sagely.

Walter blinked at that observation coming from Pippi.

Then he blinked again, because, hey, Pippi.

Sometimes he forgot how well-traveled she was.

Pippi notices the blinking.

"What?"

Walter shrugged, trying not to look uncomfortable. "Nothing. I guess I've never really given much thought to the sexual habits of Pippis birds."

"Well why do you think they call it 'the birds and the bees'?"

"Because people don't want to think about educated fleas?"

"Does that make me an educated flea?" ;)

Pippi gave that some thought.

"I suppose trying to figure out how to deal with all those legs getting in the way is a bit distracting..."

Let's do it; let's fall in love.

Walter found himself unaccountably humming Cole Porter. "They must figure it out somehow, there are an awful lot of them in some places."

"So how would you catigorise dragons then?"
