Surviving (and Thriving) on Fandom Island, Week 12 (Wed., Period 3)
"It know it's only the fall semester, and it isn't even over yet, but there's no harm in being prepared," Tahiri began. "For explaining Fandom to people from home, that is. It may not be a issue for you, but sometimes, it's funny how 'I went to school on an island in a completely different world, hundreds of years in the past' -- or future, or, well, you get the idea, but the point is that's not always easy to explain. Or maybe even something you should explain."
"Even if you don't mention Fandom's more colorful elements, you're still left with questions to answer at times," Ghanima agreed. "Such as 'where did you learn to pick locks,' or 'who taught you how to use a sword?' or 'why did some little kid claiming to be you call me last weekend?.' Even if you have a good alibi for your teenage years, how do you explain away typically non-traditional skills?"
"Or what that little glowing device you carry around is, the one you say you're playing games on." Tahiri nodded. "Fandom can follow people home, too, that's the thing. You might fall asleep in your own bed back home and wake up as someone else the next morning -- don't worry, that generally wears off in a day or two just like it does here. And unfortunately, not everyone is going to take 'I spent a few years in a really weird place' as a good enough explanation."
"So today, you're going to come up with ways of explaining away the bits and pieces of your life that you can't share with someone," Ghanima informed them. "For instance, I excuse my absences at court by saying I'm on a scholastic retreat, which is easily believable to the members of the Great Houses. I've long been thought of as the more historically-inclined of the Atreides Twins, even before we took the throne, and I take advantage of that. It even has the benefit of being a shade of the truth, so if I went up against another Truthsayer, they could not say I was lying."
Tahiri spoke up, "Me, on the other hand, I tend to take advantage of being part of a group that's known to travel all over the galaxy on missions --" including that particularly memorable one with future-you, Mara -- "all the time, maybe for a few days, maybe years. A lot of the time I can get away with just saying I got called away on Jedi business. That's usually good enough for people, and that's probably one of your best bets: coming up with a way to explain things that leaves as little opportunity as possible for people to ask you questions and poke holes in your story."
She paused. "Unless you're good enough at lying that you can come up with an elaborate cover story that's really solid, and I'm not putting that past you."
"Keep as close to the truth as you can, even if you're very good at lying," Ghanima advised dryly. "It keeps things clear. Tell a truth if you can't do the truth."
"Now get in duos or groups and work on your cover stories. Everything from where you went to school, to some item you now own that's not common where you are from."
