Magical Bestiary | Tuesday, period 2

"All right, everybody, settle down." Did they need settling down? Probably not. Bob seemed a bit harried and distracted today, though.

"So far in this class, we've been studying based on my own experience and knowledge of creatures. Which, let's be honest, is extensive and thorough." He was modest, too. "But given you all come from different worlds, times, and what-have-you, it's entirely possible that the sorts of creatures you're likely to encounter are ones I haven't covered yet."

Possible. He supposed. Maybe. "Now, you tell me: what creatures does your world have, what creatures are you worried about, that we haven't covered yet? Discussion time!" He clapped his hands together gleefully.

Dante shrugged. "We already talked about the demons the first time around."

"Giants are frightening," Anders put in. "They aren't like the ones in stories here. They're as tall as a tree and have tusks and kill and eat anything that crosses their paths."

"We have Humans, Dragons, Leontines, Aerians, Barrani, and the Tha'alani, but they're just different kinds of people." Except for how the Tha'alani were disgusting and gross and could reach in and mess with your mind. He might have noticed by the look on her face as she all but spat that name.

At least she didn't actually spit on the floor. Did she get points for that?

"Varterrals," offered Merrill. "They're very large, like five-legged spiders, and spit poison. The elves say that long ago, in the time of Arlathan, Dirthamen created the first one from rocks and trees and rain and wind to watch over a city that he loved. It's said that to this day, it still guards those ruins. A varterral may be defeated hundreds of times, but if it has a duty to guard something, or someplace, it will stay alive no matter what."

Her voice had a lot more purpose and focus to it than usual, but then, she was talking about Dalish lore.

She paused briefly before adding, "They aren't supposed to attack elves, though, unless they're attacked first."

"Well, let's see," Mabel said, and then readied her finger for ticking things off. "There were the zombies, and the gnomes. We managed to fend the zombies off with a perfect three-part harmony, and a leaf-blower is more than enough to send a pack of gnomes scurrying away. My world has merpeople," Mabel needed to take a moment to blush and smile a little at that, "and ghosts - I was only possessed that one time, I swear - and a shape-shifting pile of angry candy. The actual just plain old shapeshifter was about the same level of terrifying as that. Cursed video game characters... a few of those, actually... Lilliputtians, which are kind of little... golf ball... people..."

Okay, this was starting to sound crazy, even Mabel could cop to that.

"Then there's the gremloblin, which is a sort of gremlin-goblin hybrid. You don't want to mess with one of those. Or give them their allotted five minute employee breaks. Just trust me on that one. There's the giant flying head-island, which you want to mess with even less than the gremloblin, and the love god..."

Seriously, Bob, what were you expecting would come of this?

Anders was there, and as bright-eyed and ready to learn as he ever was.
