Hunting 101, Thursday

Sam was looking a little disgruntled as he stood in front of the class today, surrounded by bags. There was a suitcase that said BLACK SHEEP, a long telescope case that said RESPONSIBLE FOR MOM'S DEATH and other small bags with peeks of BROTHER and BOYFRIEND that he was trying to kick under the desk without drawing too much attention. There was also a purse by his feet that said TERRIBLE TEACHER which, yes, he was aware of.

"Hey guys, I'm so sorry about being MIA for the past few weeks. I had something different planned for today, but in light of our current island situation, I thought today would be a good day to talk about djinn." Not gin, sorry Frank. "Djinn, or genies, are pretty popular in stories, and mentions of them go back for centuries, even before written record. Most people think of genies like the genie in the lamp - if you find the right lamp and free the genie trapped inside, you get three wishes. Unfortunately, the actual creature is a lot creepier." Which was pretty par for the course with the supernatural. "Djinn look like humans, and survive by draining their victims of blood and drinking it. But this isn't a quick drink like a vampire. Instead, djinn poison their victims with a touch, and cause them to have severe hallucinations. The victims end up thinking they're in a world where their greatest fantasies have come true, and they can stay in this fantasy world for days while they're being drained, until they finally die."

Sam ducked out of the way as a duffel bag labeled STILL TOO EMO and kicked it under the desk with the rest. "Djinn can be killed with a silver knife dipped in lamb's blood, or you can go the zombie method and bash their skulls in with something." Sorry for the grossness, but he didn't make the rules. "If you're willing to share, tell us what you think your fantasy world would look like. I can tell you, mine would involve a lot of my family members being healthy and alive and kicking." And less baggage. "Then, if you--or anyone, so maybe it's not so personal--had to go out by being killed by something supernatural, do you think it would be better to be killed by something like a djinn that made sure your final days were pleasant, or would be better to go out fighting?"

Yeah, Kathy was collecting a healthy (or maybe less-than-healthy) number of bags during class. She was doing her best to keep them contained and flipped facedown under her desk, but four had popped up during the lecture itself and for all Kathy knew, more were incoming.

It made it hard as hell to take notes, but Terrible Daughter made for a decent enough footrest.

True to form, all of Four's (many, many) bags were black.

Most of them read "Daddy issues."

Ada just kept methodically scooting her bags under her desk with her foot, doing her best to keep her eyes on Sam and not read the strange luggage.

She'd kinda gotten the gist after "monster's daughter," "doomed like her mother," and "freakshow" had shown up. She was seriously considering taking them down to the beach to drown the lot.

Bags everywhere. Everywhere.

She kicked the one that said 'You Let Them Die' under the desk on top of the ones that said 'Murderer' and 'Useless Piece of Fief Trash'.

At this rate she was going to start breaking things out of sheer rage.

Lottie had a small pile of schoolbags gathered by her desk, which she seemed to be entirely unconcerned with, despite them being labeled things like 'bad friend', 'possibly broken like in a sexual way', and 'dead dad'. It probably helped that none of them looked to be overwhelming, either in size or quantity. In fact, all of them folded up to fit rather neatly in her usual messenger bag.

She was extremely curious about everyone else's bags, though. Her notes might be more lists of bag labels than anything useful about djinni.

Frank had a few large bags round him. One labeled "Catheine," another with the lengthy note "Did a lot of questionable things in the name of a church run by crazy people who, to be honest, were slightly too bloodthisty in general as it applies to monsters and demons and the like."

But the most fun bag was the "Alcoholic" bag, which was FILLED WITH BOOZE. So today was pretty great.

Yeah, Kathy remembered all too well what her fantasy hallucination looked like. Thanks Gaunt.

Oh, and thank you island for deciding to send her another few bags. Mirror Junkie and Betrayed A Friend joined the rest under her desk, put there with a little more force than was strictly necessary.

So...no. She didn't think she'd be sharing her fantasy hallucination with the class.

"Probably close to this island, minus the luggage," Four said a little wryly. "Travel, endless electricity and hot water, cake all the time? Sign me up."

"It'd probably start with my dad not dyin when I was tiny," Lottie mused. "And then all of my friends from home would be at school with me. And we'd all have pet wendigos!"

Had she mentioned that wendigos in her world were more like anthropomorphic, yak-eating dogs? Because that was an important part of this fantasy.

"It would be extremely inappropriate to share in a school setting," Frank said. And then he winked, you know, just in case it wasn't clear.

"I'd rather go fighting," Kathy said, with a touch more ferocity than might have been expected. "At least if you're fighting, you have a chance. You fall into a dream and you're just stuck there until you're dead. Let me fight and if I die, at least I go knowing that I tried to make a difference."

"Fighting," Kaylin said firmly, staring down the bag that said 'Better Off Dead'. "What's the point of just dreaming yourself to death?"

"Ideally, I'd prefer dying not to hurt," Lottie mused. "But I'm well stubborn, so I'd prolly fight anyway."
