Drama, Monday, Period 4

After last week's auditions, Lito had decided to just swap all the parts around entirely, or at least, as much as his cast would allow. To that end, he had ~~handwavily~~ notified the class of their parts and asked them to start learning their lines and come to class ready to rehearse Act I. Just in case anyone didn't have e-mail, he'd posted the cast list by the sign-in sheet where everyone could see it when they arrived. It read:

April: Sir Toby Belch & Sebastian
Raven Darkholme: Malvolio & Antonio
Hanna Heller: Curio & First Officer
Kathy Li: Duke Orsino & Second Officer
Garik Loran: Olivia & Captain
Ada Miller: Sir Andrew & Priest
Ezra Sagishi: Viola
Thorin: Clown & Fabian

"Yes," he began, "almost all of you are playing at least two parts, and if I have made an error and someone is onstage at the same time as their other role, some of you may be pressed into service to cover for that--Raven, you may have to play the clown in Act V, as Fabian is also onstage at that time." Yes, he had cast Thorin as the clown, but in his defense Wolfgang had dared him to. "But we're going to make it work, and most of the secondary parts--most, but not all," he had to admit, "--are small parts, just a few lines here or there. So it will be okay!" he hoped.

"Now, if anyone has any questions or objects strongly to their casting, please let me know. Otherwise, I want everyone to start practicing their lines for Act I, alone or in groups. Let's get started, yes?"

This was the first Ezra was seeing of the cast list.

And yes, he was delighted and snickering.

Start practicing your lines!

Anders glanced through the script and realized he was in the first scene, along with Kathy and Hanna. "So I guess I'm starting from the beginning," he mused as he waited for his group.

"Agreed," Kathy said, grabbing her script and heading over to Anders. "I'm going to need a lot of time to practice my whining. I have to sound broody and attractive while complaining about how hard my love life is."

"I have to play servants," Anders said sympathetically, squinting down at the pages again. "I don't think either of them gets to have her own love life, unless Belch pawing over me counts." He frowned. "Is that a real name? Belch?"

"Sir Toby Belch, yep," Kathy said. "That's how you know he's a comedic character. It tells you pretty much everything you need to know about him. Just like Sir Andrew Aguecheek."

"At least they're straightforward about that much," Anders mused. "Unlike the rest of the play. I can't make out half of what I'm supposed to be saying without concentrating on every single word."

Shakespeare was hard enough when you came from the same world it was written in. When you came from a different world...

"If you want, I can help you translate," Kathy offered. "It usually takes a few minutes of watching for everything to click and make sense. Reading is even harder."

"Is there a movie of this?" Anders wondered, perking up. He was just lazy enough that watching instead of reading sounded fantastic. "I'll watch it. But you translating might help us right now, I think. I'm not sure what the whole bit with the element not beholding her face is. What element?"

"There are probably a hundred movies of this," Kathy said. "Shakespeare's been famous for centuries. I'll find us a good one to watch?"

Because he wasn't going to have a Shakespeare movie night without her, was he?

"And the element is the sky. I think it was just a fancy way of saying 'sky' in books and plays around the time this play was written."

"I'll bring the snacks," Anders promised, because of course he wasn't going to have movie night without Kathy. "All right. So I'm saying the lady I work for is going to lock herself up and cry for seven years without going outside because she's sad her brother died. Seems just slightly excessive, doesn't it?"

Damn right he wouldn't. No Anders without Katherine, dammit.

"Yeah, except I'm pretty sure she's just doing it to avoid Orsino, since this guy is totally the kind who doesn't take no for an answer," Kathy said, wrinkling her nose. "So she's just hoping that the idea of seven years of this will send him sniffing off after someone else and leaving her alone."

"And he's important enough that she can't just say it's not a good match, so she has to hint," Anders said, looking equally appalled. "Maker's breath. And am I reading your next lines wrong, or does he miss the point and start talking about death?"

"Even worse," Kathy said, grimacing. "So, if this is how much she loves her brother, just imagine what it'll be like when she loves me. She'll love me so much she won't even think about anyone else, every thought will be for me." If Kathy rolled her eyes any harder, she'd give herself a headache. "And then he demands to be led into the garden so he can think about love while surrounded by flowers."

"So you get to play a twat," Anders summarized. "Congratulations."

"I'll really get to flex those acting muscles," Kathy said, laughing. "It'll be fun to be such a jerk. Also?" She raised an eyebrow at Anders. "Pretty sure that this much entitlement makes him a dick, not a twat, babe."

"But twat implies he's stupid, and dick just means he's arrogant," Anders argued. "We could split the difference and call him an asshole."

Kathy burst out laughing at that. It was a joke that worked on multiple levels and she applauded him for it. "Sounds perfect," she agreed. "You think I can pull it off?"

Anders beamed, proud of himself for making Kathy laugh even if the joke had been pretty silly.

"I think it'll be hard work," he said lightly. "You might need to practice outside class. Say stupid things. Be rude to waiters. All of that."

Silly pfft, Kathy liked wordplay and puns.

"Oooh, can I skip the part where I'm mean to the waitstaff?" Kathy asked, giving Anders sad eyes. "I'll make up for it by being obnoxious and entitled elsewhere, promise."

"Oh, I suppose," Anders said, as if granting some great concession. "But only if you promise not to say anything interesting as long as you're getting into character. You have to be too stupid and self-absorbed for that."

"You drive a hard bargain, Anders, but I'm up to it, I think," Kathy said. "So nothing interesting. Or smart. And everything I say has to be about me somehow, because even when my crush is mourning her dead brother, I find a way to make it about me."

"Because obviously it's about you," Anders nodded seriously. "Who else would it be about? The brother? He's too dead to care."

"And anybody else is obviously unimportant," Kathy sneered. "Hello, I'm the Duke of Illyria! If it's not about me, what even is the point?"

Anders grinned. "See, that's a proper posh attitude," he told Kathy. "You should try it on Cassandra. See how many times she hmph's at you."

"You just want to see who will win in a fight between me and Cassandra," Kathy told him. "And, as Duke of Illyria, I am required to inform you that it's me."

She paused. "...Not that that needs to be repeated to her, mind."

"... but it would be funny," Anders protested, chuckling. "All right, have it your way. No tattling to Cassandra about the Duke of Illyria."

"Not about how the Duke of Illyria is bragging that she can kick her butt anyway," Kathy said. Then, sounding as pompous as she could, she she added, "I wouldn't want her to get upset about it. Or, you know, fall in love with me over my clearly superior martial prowess."

Raven didn't have an entrance until scene V, so she sat back, eager to watch her fellow students perform first.

"Does anyone else find the part where I mistakenly marry Sebastian and he just kind of goes along with it creepy?" Face asked, now having properly read the play. "Especially since I'm clearly in love with Viola."

Hanna absently raised her hand, thinking Face was taking a poll.

Once she pings in.

Two small parts, that she could manage. And memorize the lines easily enough. Helping everyone else would be easy.

He understands if you have concerns.

I thought this play was going to be a piece of cake to cast until I got Act V, when pretty much everyone wanders on and offstage during the course of one scene. So if I've botched this at any point then hey, feel free to have your character moving back and forth to different marks and doing voices. Alternately, they can bribe Raven to shapeshift into one of their characters for that scene or something.
