Creative Inspirations | Monday, period one

Jono had been so disappointed to find they'd missed Halloween due to being in New York. If he could pout, he probably would be. As it was, Hannibal was certain he had moped all night. And shared.

Jonothon really couldn't help it if his favourite holiday ever just happened to be Halloween, okay? It was one of the very few things he actually thought the Americans did right.

So, the bright and cheery thing they'd planned for today was out, and Hannibal had employed all his charm to get Portalocity to change their portal for another. Hopefully this would at least be dark and foreboding enough to cheer Jono up.

Or something like that.

"I hope you all had a lovely weekend," he began. "Today we will be returning to Italy. However, Il Parco dei Mostri is a very different place, so I hope you won't feel we're repeating ourselves. This place was created in the sixteenth century, and contains a number of sculptures, designed to be more awe-inspiring and shocking than beautiful."

He smiled. "And as we'll be in gardens, I've brought a bit of a picnic as well. I hope you all enjoy our trip."

//As usual,// Jono chimed in, //respect for our surroundings. Though by this point, I'm certain none of you need to be told.//

... He wasn't looking at Dante. He wasn't. Dante was a big boy and didn't need to be told by this point either, dammit.

Sacro Bosco site (http://www.sacrobosco.it/eng/enter.php")

The pegasus, the Hannibal's elephant, the sirens.

And then you can eat in the Orcus' mouth, where every whisper can be clearly heard at the bottom of the steps. Hannibal has made a very fancy salad and several pizzas: goat cheese and grilled pear; roasted garlic, fresh basil, and tomato; and yes, Dante - sausage and mozzarella with tomato sauce.

So you couldn't actually doodle on stone.

But you could totally draw a dick on a post-it and put it over the Roman centurion's crotch when no one was looking.

And then you could totally go for some sausage pizza.

It was art.

Well, the pizza was art. Still, as long as Dante kept his vandalism to non-destructive types, the worst he'd get was a look for the childishness.

"I did promise you pizza some time ago," Hannibal said as he set it out. "I hope this is pedestrian enough for your tastes." The sausage and tomato sauce were home-made but fairly traditionally spiced (and meated, as far as that went), the mozzarella and the crust were fresh, and...well, the whole thing was as gourmet as a "regular" pizza could get.

Could Hannibal have made it more simply? Very likely. Was he about to? Not hardly; what would Dante have to sneer at then?

Hannibal's clothes, the way Hannibal talked, the way Hannibal was dating a hipster from a different century, or just Hannibal being an authority figure in general?

Really, if it wasn't for the food, the guy would probably be real high up on Dante's teacher shitlist.

"I dunno what pedestrian is, but it's okay pizza," Dante said, with half of it already in his mouth. Oops?

If Dante ever wanted to see Hannibal laugh uproariously, he should describe Jono like that to his face.

As it was, he just shook his head in amusement. "I thank you for that ringing endorsement."

Maria was so caught up in exploring the statues and the designs that she almost missed the fact that Dr. Lecter was putting out lunch.

She left the Pegasus and went to nibble on a piece of fresh basil pizza even while her eyes were clearly clouded with deep thoughts.

"You have the look of a girl with something on her mind," Hannibal observed, pouring her a (plastic; sigh) cup of mint soda.

Maria pulled herself back from what she was thinking and gave Dr. Lecter a small smile as she accepted the cup and said thank you.

"I'm just thinking about how some people have different perceptions of beauty. These statues are gorgeous too me and they made me think about some friends back home."

"I like to think there is beauty in everything," Hannibal said, smiling. "Very little is truly ugly."

He had a wider definition of beauty than most.

"What about it makes you think of your friends?"

Cosette was absolutely fascinated by this place -- she loved gardens, and despite the statuary's tendency toward the macabre she thought it was all lovely. She roamed absolutely everywhere, and took a particular pleasure out of marching straight into the screaming mouth . . . where she was rather charmed by the picnic table.

And the food, of course. Especially the grilled pear pizza, to her surprise.

"Enjoying the day, Mademoiselle?" Hannibal asked as he offered her another piece.

"Very much," Cosette said earnestly, but with a bright smile as she accepted the piece of pizza. "I know all of this is supposed to be unsettling, but . . . I do think it's rather beautiful, even if I am sad for the man who created it all."

"I'm pleased," Hannibal said. "I like to think that the unsettling can often be beautiful. And I imagine he'd be pleased to know that such a remembrance has lasted for so long."
