"Good morning," Hannibal greeted the class. "I hope you all had an interesting and relaxing weekend. Today, we have a rare opportunity, and will be visiting the castle of Sammezzano, in Tuscany. It was built in the mid nineteenth century as a retreat by a marquis; all of the materials were created locally, and the entire thing was designed by him to echo styles of art and architecture from around the world, though he never himself left Italy."

He held up a hand. "These days, the castle has suffered significant wear, and is in the process of being restored. It is rarely open to the public. Please be careful and respectful while you are there."

After that, you weren't his concern.

And with that, the portal opened, and the students were ushered on through.

Yeah, the castle was weird. Super-colorful and everything, which was fine-- kinda cool-- but there was something about it that reminded Dante of home.

Which was not a feeling he enjoyed much.

Though at least he repressed the urge to graffiti all over it... mostly by virtue of not bringing anything. "Wish I had a Sharpie," he muttered under his breath.

Cosette was more than willing to run over every inch of the castle where she was allowed (respectfully, as bidden, and taking care not to touch anything) and take pictures until her phone ran out of battery.

And then plug her phone into her portable charger pack and keep taking pictures.

Creatively!

Dante snagged a canvas and drew some crude, arch-like shapes on it, much like back at the castle.

Why he spent the rest of the class adding little shaded black figures to that drawing, caught in various postures of pain or sadness, he was in no mood to explain.

Cosette headed over to the piano and started playing around with an old hymn -- something reverential and serious, the way she'd learned it at the convent, but changing the key, adjusting a phrase here and there, adding in some ornamentation, and playing with the tempo and meter to transform it bit by bit into something brighter, more colorful but somehow still stately.

At least, she hoped that was the end result.

After their pinging in...ly?

The castle was quite lovely, but Jono could really only think about what the acoustics had to be like in there. Not that he could really give them a test run while they were wandering around in there.

But since he couldn't quite get over that one little thing, he was writing a guitar arrangement back in the classroom that was intended specifically to be played in large, enclosed spaces.

Hannibal had a special fondness for Tuscany, and the castle itself was lovely. He was spending his time in the classroom composing new recipes, Italian-focused with some of the same influences Sammezzano used.
