"I hope you all had a good time with the dinosaurs last week," Bob started without preamble. "This week, we'll be discussing their cousins of a sort." He wrote in the air: dragons.

"Now," he said cheerfully, "fortunately there's only one thing you really need to know about dragons. Don't piss them off." An illusion - Danger Shop, Bob, or both - appeared, roared and breathed harmless flame at them, then dissipated. "They're almost all much larger than a human, range from incredible animal cunning to genius-level intelligence, and depending on the world and region, may breathe fire, acid, or lethal gas, and may be able to perform magic.

"If you've got the time and need to deal with them for some reason, again - find out what they want. Research what sort of dragon they are, and what their weaknesses might be. There are an infinite variety. Be polite. Be helpful. Many of the more intelligent ones can be reasoned with, so long as you don't give them reason to hate you. If you're short on time or they're short on patience, for the love of god, run. Or sneak. Or hide. Give them whatever they want, unless it's you as dinner. Just don't piss them off, and get out as soon as you can."

He really hoped that part had sunk in.

"I know some of you have dragons in your own worlds, so let's talk and compare notes. What are yours like? If you don't have them or haven't met any, what do your legends say that they're like? And what sorts of strategies are supposed to work for them?" Bob would grade your legends happily. Anything other than "leave them the hell alone" was getting an F.

Nod along in agreement that you will not piss off dragons!

What sorts of dragons do you have? How do you not piss them off?

"We thought ours were extinct until about 20 years ago," Anders said, then glanced to Merrill ~~assuming she was there~~ and amended, "Humans did, anyhow. I don't know about elves. They're enormous and dumb and like to breathe fire at people. I've never heard a way to defeat them except brute force. Their young are maybe the size of a pony, and they aren't supposed to be so bad to fight."

"None of the smart kind, then?" Bob asked. "And please tell me you don't go fighting the little ones while the big ones are around."

"Not that I ever heard of," Anders said, shaking his head. "But we thought we killed them all hundreds of years ago, so maybe we don't know everything. And picking a fight with the little ones would be a good way to end up charbroiled."

"Precisely," Bob answered, relaxing a little. "And even the dumb ones make up for it in sheer power. So, best to run."

"The Dragon Emperor rules Elantra and pretty much eats anyone who doesn't agree with him," Kaylin said. "Pretty much you just try to stay the hell out of there way or shut the hells up if you're stuck having to deal with one."

Guess who was never very good at the shutting the hells up part. Go ahead. You get three guesses and the first two don't count.

Bob nodded emphatically. "Don't piss them off, and run fast if you have to. Are yours very touchy?"

"Touchy doesn't begin to cover it," Kaylin said dryly. "But it's better not to run. They can totally outrun you. Or outfly you. Or out... flame you. Just stay very still and hope they'll go away. Not that that's likely to happen.

"Ehh." Bob grimaced in sympathy. "How many have you got, apart from the Emperor?"

"There's at least 4 others," Kaylin said after a moment's thought. "But pretty much I stay away from the Imperial Palace and all that, so who knows how many more there could be."

"Probably a wise decision." Bob nodded. "Easier to not rile them up if you're somewhere else."

He's here! Not pissing off dragons!

Anders was firmly on team Don't Piss off Dragons, and wasn't so sure he believed they could be reasoned with either.

In summary: angry dragons bad.
