Hunting 101, Thursday

Sam had sent a message to the students to meet him at the Danger Shop today. When they arrived, they'd find themselves in a city setting late at night, standing on a deserted street.

"Hey guys," Sam said, grinning excitedly. "Today, I thought we'd get in some practical practice." Before he could continue, a moaning noise came from a few blocks away, thankfully low and distant. "So, one of the things people like to joke about being prepared for is the zombie apocalypse, but really, zombies are no joking matter. Really, nothing in the 'undead and wants to chomp on you' category is a joking matter, but at least some creatures can be reasoned with. Zombies... well, in most lore, there's usually not much left of their human side, so trying to convince them not to eat you with reasons and facts isn't going to work."

He pointed to a table with a variety of knives, machetes, crossbows, aerosol cans, and lighters. "Unfortunately, the only way to protect yourself from a zombie is to take them out of the picture. This side is close range," he said, pointing to the sharp and pointys. "It can be easier to fight with these kinds of weapons, but you run the risk of getting close enough to bite. The other side is your long range. Crossbows and the like can be good if you know how to use them. Anyone can use an aerosol can and a lighter." Sam grabbed a can and a lighter and took a few steps back, showing off the makeshift flamethrower. "Effective and easy to use, but you run into the possibility of hitting your own friends or accidentally setting them on fire, and that's no kind of help."

"There are a pack of zombies about four blocks away who will shamble their way over here within a few minutes," Sam continued. "Pick your weapon of choice, and see how well you can defend yourself and your classmates. You can also choose not to fight, there's no shame in it. But you have to tell me what you'd do instead - be a lookout? Provide first aid? In an apocalypse, everyone's got to play their part." And if they were lucky, they'd never have to put that statement to the test.

Ada kicked off her boots, slung her crossbow over her shoulder, got a grip, and promptly started to climb her way up a street lamp to perch at the top quite comfortably.

Instant lookout and long-range shot, and she could slide down fast enough if needed. And it didn't sound like these things were smart enough to look up in the first place.

"Nice," Four said, grinning up at her. "Good idea."

Ada grinned and waved down. "I like heights," she laughed. "And these things aren't supposed to be too bright, right? I might as well have a pretty view while they face the wrath of Fandom."

"Climbing might be beyond them," Four agreed, though he wasn't trying to climb anything himself. Four wasn't a huge fan of heights. "You're trained with a crossbow?"

Ada made a face at her weapon. "I'm a decent shot with a rifle or a shotgun," she confessed, "--only used one of these once or twice. But it's my best option."

"I wonder if zombies can't be killed with guns," Four said.

"Well, if they're an 'end of the world' thing, 's probably a shortage of bullets eventually. You can always learn how to carve an arrow, eventually," Ada mused. "If you can figure out the balance."

Her feet swung back-and-forth beneath her as she peered down at Four. "What'd you pick?"

"The fire thing," Four said, "and I'm pretty good at throwing knives."

Ada perked up. "Really? You do throwing knives? How hard is that to learn?"

It would be really valuable back at the carnival, to have another skill that she could step-in with when they needed to shake-up the acts.

"I taught people over the summer," Four said. "It's not too tough."

The first zombie began shambling toward them and he hit it straight in the eye with his knife.

"Pretty good" was slightly underselling his skills.

"You're more than 'pretty good,'" Ada said bluntly. She loaded up her crossbow and took careful aim at one that came around the corner. "Time to see what the range on this thing actually is."

She waited until it was within 150 yards, and then fired. Her shot caught it square in the chest, and it staggered back a few steps but then kept coming. "Hey now! That was a perfectly respectable shot! Fall over already!"

"That really is poor manners," Four agreed, getting his flamethrower ready.

Kaylin was quite happy to grab her daggers and take off after whatever zombies she could get her hands on. She was well-trained and in the mood to wreak some havoc. Zombies would do just fine.

Frank grabbed a machete and a lighter, tucked the machete under his arm, and started walking casually toward the zombies as he mixed himself a cocktail in his shaker. By the time he reached the zombies, he filled the glass he had also been holding, removed his pocket square, partially crammed it into his shaker, lit the square on fire, said a few last words to the alcohol that was about to give its life, and tossed it gently into the crowd.

"Fair warning, there's about to be a real explosion," Frank called out. "This is not pretend, and that dirty martini bomb is extremely--" An explosion knocked the group of zombies over. Several were on fire, many more were in little bitty pieces that were also on fire. "--Well, you know." Frank sipped his drink, handled his machete, and started chopping the mostly whole zombies into little bitty pieces the slow way without any concern that he might be zombied.

Fire struck Kathy as a bad idea. The human body required a fire at fourteen hundred degrees to burn to ash (don't ask her how she knew that, please). Lighting the zombies on fire would turn them into torches, capable of lighting other things on fire, but it would take them awhile to go down. It wasn't like they could feel pain.

Instead, she'd grabbed a machete and got to work. If she was three times faster than any human, the multiplier compared to zombies was much higher. She could dart through an entire crowd of zombies, hacking and slashing, dancing out of the way before any of of them could touch her with rotting hands.
