"Expanding on the theme of last week," Bob said, "being careful of your wording. A great many creatures - through either mischievous designs or simple-mindedness - are liable to be overly literal when adhering to an agreement. Or, conversely, interpret words in novel ways. So, today, we're going to do a little exercise." He pointed at a student randomly. "You. Ask for something. Nothing here is binding, so make it as extravagant as you like. The rest of you, you're all magical beings of some sort. Say what you might do to grant that request in some way the asker isn't intending. Then we'll go around the room, and each of the rest of you do the same. I'll also offer my assistance."

He looked around at them and nodded. "Well. What would you each like?"

Dante was not paying a whole lot of attention to class today. He fidgeted restlessly with a pen while Bob was talking.

Fucking hell, Kathy.

Bob cleared his throat and gave Dante a Significant Look.

In return, Dante gave him a Significant The Finger.

"There's not much point in being here if you aren't paying attention," Bob said pointedly. He didn't much care if students attended or not, but he wasn't going to teach anyone who wasn't listening; that just wasted both their times.

Dante shrugged.

He hopped onto his feet, gave his chair a spin, smirked at Bob, and walked out of the classroom.

Bob rolled his eyes and went back to teaching.

Ping in your request, then answer each other!

"I want a nap," Kaylin said. And she did damn it all.

In fact, she'd been late because she'd fallen asleep in her last class.

Bob nodded. "So. What if I were to agree, and you were to fall suddenly asleep in the middle of something dangerous?"

"How dangerous?" Kaylin asked curiously. "And who'd be in danger? If it's me, it still might be worth it the way I feel right now."

Yeah, she was a difficult one.

"Hang gliding. Over a volcano. Or performing delicate surgery on someone," Bob answered. "The point isn't the exact thing," he said, "the point is that you haven't accounted for that sort of happening."

"I guess," she said. "But it's not like I'd go making random wishes anyway."

Probably.

"Probably the safest thing to do," Bob said. "But whenever you're dealing with magic or creatures - or even people - paying attention to things like this is a good idea."

Magic was so annoying. But people...

"Well, people, sure," Kaylin said. "Most of them are pretty much out for whatever they can get, so of course you have to pay attention. And nobody trusts mages anyway."

"Precisely. Well," Bob said, "The mages thing depends, but the rest is pretty universal. So pretend you're making a deal with a person, or interrogating them. The key is to pay attention to the words and all the potential loopholes."

"I want freedom for mages everywhere," Anders said, thinking big.

"Wonderful!" Bob said, grinning. "You've just set free all your people. And every justifiably imprisoned mage in the multiverse."

Anders tilted his head to the side thoughtfully. "Interesting," he said. "Am I allowed a second go? I could qualify it to be only for the unjustly imprisoned ones."

"Of course." Bob shrugged. "But who decides what's just?"

"Well, if you have the power to grant a wish, presumably you," Anders said thoughtfully. "...which would be another problem, wouldn't it?"

"Precisely," Bob said approvingly. "Even speaking non-hypothetically, I know there are people who'd disagree with my judgment. Or yours," he added, shrugging.

"How much can you trust your wish-granter? It isn't even about whether you believe they're good or not - how much can you trust their understanding of your wishes, and their ability to control their magic?"

"I want to not be cursed," Blue said.

Not that there was anyone she particularly wanted to kiss, but it would be nice to have had the option.

"Cursed?" Bob asked.

Blue shrugged. "I'm cursed. If I kiss my true love, he'll die."

Bob frowned. "Well, that hardly seems fair. Who or what caused the curse?"

That was a very good question! "I don't know," Blue admitted. "I've just always been told I'm cursed."

Bob just stared at her for a moment. "And you're sure it's not just your family trying to keep you from kissing?"

It was probably a good thing Bob had never been a parent.
