Drama, Monday, Period 4

"I would like to put a question to the class this week," Lito said. "At the end of the semester, we will be putting on a play for the rest of the student body. I've already received a few suggestions about what that play should be, but I wanted to get your input rather than just announcing 'this is what we're doing.' Do any of you have a specific play in mind, or something you would like the play to be about? Are you deathly allergic to musicals? Let me know."

"If we wanted to do a play, I think Strychnine and Old Silk has about the right number of characters," Kathy said thoughtfully. "As for a musical, ~~meta for-~~Wicked, maybe?"

"I love ~~meta for~~ Wicked!" April squealed. "Do you think there are enough substantial roles for all of us? Or maybe we could have a different cast for Act Two so it's fair."

"I'm counting eight named roles, I think," Kathy said, counting. "How many people are in the class?"

April rattled off the full names of everyone she thought was in the class. "I count nine?" She frowned. "Would it be bad to split one role into two somehow?"

She loved the musical, but didn't want to be unfair. It was a tough line to walk.

"If everybody wants a singing role, I certainly don't see why we couldn't," Kathy said. "And eight doesn't count the nameless roles, like the castle guard and random students and whatnot."

"So there's room for Anders after all!" she teased. "Doing a big show with an ensemble of one is plucky. I like it."

"I trust Anders to play every citizen in the city all by himself," Kathy agreed with a laugh. "It'll take some impressive range and insanely fast costume changes, but he can do it!"

"My school assigned big brother is a talented man," April declared solemnly, "and I can't wait to see him play ~~meta for~~ Elphaba's mom in labor."

"The pretty blonde hair will really help sell it," Kathy agreed. "I'm looking forward to him being the flying monkey, actually. He's quite skilled at cavorting."

"Oooh, yes," April agreed. "I don't think I've ever seen Anders cavort before! We have to fix that."

"He more commonly capers," Kathy explained. "But he's been known to bust out a good cavort when the time calls for it."

She was the worst friend!

"Why didn't he do that when he was giving me the lowdown on the island?" April said in an exaggerated whine. "That would have been the best orientation! I bet he can shimmy, too. And he never even told me!"

Anders, explain yourself!

"He didn't?!" Kathy gasped, well and truly appalled. "You don't even understand, April!" She lowered her voice like she was imparting a grand secret. "He can shimmy and shake!"

April gasped theatrically (see, there was a reason she was in this class). "Kathy," sh whispered, "are you sure? Why, I've been the worst little sister ever, not supporting his hobbies like this! How can I make him feel supported after this terrible neglect?"

"Well," Kathy said, reaching to clasp April's hands if she was okay with that. "There's still time for you to make amends. But it might require the ultimate form of support. Jazz hands, April. Are you prepared to jazz hands for Anders?"

"It is the ultimate sacrifice," April pondered, squeezing Kathy's hands, "but if it's the only way to show him I care, I guess I gotta."

And then she dissolved into giggles. Damn it! She had been doing so well!
