Deception for Fun and Profit, Monday, Period 2

Bond's class were back in a normal classroom this week, so it looked like it'd be another discussion week.

"Good morning, class, I trust you all survived the weekend relatively unscathed," he greeted them once they'd all arrived. "Though it does provide a lead in to the ethics of lying. Now, I would assume that regardless of your own feelings on the matter, all of you have at one time or another been told that lying is wrong, either morally, ethically, or legally. However I would also assume that at least some of you lied over the past few days, either to your own guests or to someone else's.

"So today we're to to discuss what kind of lies you might have told this weekend, and why you might have done so, and what made that situation different to one where you wouldn't lie."

As he casts aspersions on your honesty.

What lies have you told recently and why?

"Didn't tell a single lie this weekend," Ada said, mildly affronted. "I don't need to lie to my family, and none of them showed up anyway."

No one had asked her if she was a mermaid, therefore she hadn't lied. What they assumed (with a bit of misdirection and glitter) wasn't her problem.

"Didn't have a visitor," Eggsy said. Despite what the radio said. And he was highly suspicious of all of that. "But I sure as shit ain't tellin' me mum about what this place is really like."

"She probably wouldn't believe the squirrels anyway," Mara added helpfully.

"She'd think I was on drugs." Which would be rude, but not completely uncalled for.

"Probably," Mara admitted. "Would you lie and pretend you were to make it easier on her?"

Eggsy considered that. "Yeah. Might do that."

"How far would you take it?" Mara asked. "Rehab?"

"Rehab ain't for folks like me," Eggsy replied. "That's where posh folk go to promise they've learned better."

Yeah, he didn't really buy it was helpful.

"So what would she ask you to do?" Mara asked, curious.

"Get out of her house until I got clean." Or, more likely, turn a blind eye to it like she did with Dean and his mates.

"Well, that could work," Mara said thoughtfully. "Then you can just come back here and not worry about lying any longer."

Spoken like a girl who hadn't seen her parents in a decade.

Eggsy was just forced to give her a look for that. "She's my mum."

Didn't that mean anything to you, Mara? Didn't it?

...not really, judging by the blank look.

"Oh."

"You not close to your folks?"

Mara shook her head. "I haven't seen, thought about or heard from them since I was chosen to be a dancer on Imperial Center."

What a happy, fulfilling childhood awaited all members of her universe.

"...that's fucked up." Look, he cared about his mother no matter what. Because he was a loyal and stubborn little bastard.

"They were fine with it, so I was fine with it," Mara said pragmatically.

"You don't even miss 'em?"

"Not particularly," Mara said. "I was very young when I went. I knew I would be going with the Emperor, and that's a great honor."

Well, wasn't that strange.

"Yeah, I guess." He totally thought it was an honor. Honest.

"You'll have to meet him someday," Mara said. "Then you'll understand. He's very dynamic."

Or petrifying. One of those.

That would only end in a dead boyfriend, Mara. Because Eggsy was incapable of not picking fights with people who could kill him easily.

"And maybe you'll get to meet me mum."

Who was not petrifying. At all.

"Maybe at the winter holidays," Mara said. "I don't really celebrate Christmas."

"No space Christmas?"

"Well, Life Day," Mara said, "but it's a little bit different."

"Yeah?" Share your space culture with him. Shaaaaaare.

"It's a Wookiee holiday, and I'm not a Wookiee, thank you very much," Mara said, "but it's held every three years to remember their family members who have died, their connection to their planet, and there are gifts exchanged, that sort of thing."

Now he just wanted to know what the hell a Wookie was, Mara.

"That don't sound too bad, though. Nicer than some bullshit holiday."

"So you don't celebrate when the large man in red brings a baby down through a burning fireplace for gifts?" Mara asked.

Excuse Eggsy while he laughed at that description. Laughed and laughed. You better bet he would ask her to explain Easter in the spring.

Mara frowned in confusion. "That's not correct?"
