"I know some of you will be having your parents or other relatives come this weekend," Brian opened this class with, "so you might want to not tell them about what we did last week." Although who knew? Maybe some of them would be thrilled to know their kids were learning how to break into cars at boarding school. "This week's lesson might be a safer bet, though. Say you get in your car, and it won't start. Now, there are a lot of reasons that might happen, and for some of them you're going to need a tow truck, but the first possibility is always that it's your battery, and you just need to jump start the car. And for that you need...a second car." Brian pushed a button and said second car appeared in front of his demonstration car. "You'll also need jumper cables." He opened the trunk of the demo car and took them out. "Here's what you do." He walked them through the process of jump starting a car, then pushed another button on the remote and watched a line of cars appear in front of his students' cars. "Get your cars started, race the course, get back here. Anyone attempting to just jump in the second car and drive off will find that it will not move. One, two, three, GO!"

Hey, Face was getting better at this. He'd almost finished in the first half.

Between the one car shared between 300 Fox Way and her own vehicle, Blue had learned how to jump start a car long ago. So it was easy to get it done, but she was surprised by how far ahead of everyone else she seemed. She was even more surprised when she was the first one back to the lot, but hey, free candy bar!

For if you have any particular lies you'd like him to tell your parents or anything.

Not lies, exactly, more like...a creative interpretation of the class?

"Excuse me, Mr. O'Conner?" Kathy asked, after she'd hit the finish line. "Hi, umm, my parents are going to be visiting for the weekend. I'm not sure if they're going to stop by to talk to you, but I was wondering if we could discuss some of what you might say if they do?"

"And what are you afraid I'm going to say about my practical life skills class where my students learn about automobile maintenance and repair, Miss Li?" Brian asked her.

Seriously, he hadn't been born yesterday.

"My parents aren't going to be thrilled that I'm taking this class at all, actually," Kathy said. "They'll point out that I'm going to be a doctor, not a mechanic and, umm, maybe get a little, uhh, rude?"

Sorry in advance, Brian. So sorry in advance.

Brian looked confused at her. "When did I say this was a class for future mechanics? If this was a class for future mechanics we would be way more up under the hood by now!"

"No, no," Kathy said, blushing a bit. "I'm sorry, I'm explaining myself badly. My parents aren't going to see the need for me to learn about automobile maintenance or repair, even the most basic stuff. My dad's not really big on anything that smacks of blue collar work and my mom is going to think it's not suitable for her daughter."

Kathy's parents were, uhh, complicated?

"I was mostly hoping we could say it was a required course for seniors?" she said. "Otherwise, I'm going to get lectured about taking a class that's a, umm, waste of time. Not that I think it is, of course!"

Okay, she still would hear about it, but it would be more of a general lecture and not about her choosing to waste her time. 'Because it's fun, I like going fast, and the teacher is hot' were not acceptable reasons to take a non-academic course.
