Hunting 101, Thursday

"So, I'm hoping you guys took a look at the moon on Sunday, since it wasn't your typical full moon," Sam said, once everyone was settled. "I figured, with that in mind, this would be a good week to talk about shapeshifters, namely werewolves."

"Most of you probably already know the basics about werewolves since a lot of the stereotypical portrayals of them are true. 99% of the time, werewolves are normal people like everyone else, but during the full moon, they turn into... well, it depends on where they're from. Some werewolves I've met can control their transformations, and just have a more difficult time of maintaining that control during the full moon. Others don't have any control over it - as soon as the moon is out, so is their furry side, and you don't want to be nearby when it happens. The key thing to remember is that in general, people become werewolves by being bitten by one, and they don't typically ask for it to happen."

At least he was forgiving about people sometimes being monsters?

"If you come across a werewolf and you have to get away, a silver blade is your best bet. You can try to outrun them, but most of them are pretty fast in wolf form, and a hell of a lot stronger. A quick stab to the heart could save your life, and prevent someone from doing something monsterous that they don't want to do." Of course, they'd be dead after the stabbing but shhh, details.

"For today's discussion, I want you to think about something that I hope none of you will ever have to deal with: what would you do if your friend, or someone in your family, got bitten by a werewolf? Would you protect them? Would you try to help them deal with the symptoms? Or would you try to find out who did it? Some lore says that if the person who turned a werewolf is killed, then the new werewolf will be cured. Do you think you could handle doing that?"

What would you do if someone you cared about turned into a werewolf?

"Lock her in a dog run and make sure she has plenty of kibble!"

Lottie had decided that Mildred was the most likely werewolfing candidate. What with her hippie mother and father with knowledge of quantum mechanics.

. . . And no, she didn't know what quantum mechanics had to do with werewolves, but it had to be in there somewhere.

"Millers don't leave anyone behind," Ada said flatly. "We're family. We'd probably find a way to modify a trailer for them, and they'd either get reassigned to Biological Impossibilities during the full moon or locked-down, depending on how violent they get."

"It depends," Frank noted. "I think a fetching collar with appropriate identifying information would be helpful for just about anyone prone to transformations. If it's somebody I don't actually care for that much, I might alert the local dog catcher. If it was somebody I cared about a good deal, well, even that depends on their personality. Are they revenge-minded? I'll help them hunt their werewolfer down like the dog that they quite literally are. But if they're accepting of life's quirks, I'll pour them a drink and make sure they have a sturdy chain in their yard for that time of the month."

"Protect them," Cosette said immediately, as if that wasn't even a question. "If there was some way to help them without killing the person responsible for it, I'd much prefer to do that, but in any case I'd do whatever I could to help them."

She was not thinking about the possibility of killing them being the best way to help them.

And, lo, there was a Kathy, waiting to talk to Sam after class. Because Parents' Weekend was fast approaching and unlike most of her other classes, Kathy was coming up blank on how to spin this one.

"Mr. Winchester?" she said, holding her hands together and nervously rubbing circles in her palm. "Do you have a minute to discuss the weekend?"

"Hey Kathy, what's up? Do you have people coming this weekend?" Sam asked.

"Yeah, my parents," Kathy said, with a grimace that tried to be a smile. "Oh, and my little sister, Sarah." There, the smile firmed up a bit, becoming more genuine. "The problem is, the only weirdness they're used to is the normal, LA kind? So, less supernatural stuff and more...muggings, panhandlers, and washed up child stars?" Her laugh was high, breathy and nervous. "They're also really, umm...focused. On my taking classes that will make me look more attractive to colleges and stuff." Or just regular attractive, if they were only asking her mom, but Hunting 101 wouldn't serve there, either. "Sorry to be a bother, but I was wondering if we could maybe figure out what to say to them when they ask what this course is about?"

And why the hell their daughter was taking it?

"Ah, I see," Sam said, giving her a sympathetic look. "Do they look at your class list closely? I'm not above straight up lying and telling them I teach a different course. If they'll know the name, I can say it was a mistake that hasn't gotten fixed yet."

Kathy looked relieved. She wouldn't have to explain too much! "They'll see the course names, but I doubt they'll pay much attention to the course descriptions." She pushed a lock of hair behind her ear. "They're already going to be annoyed that I'm taking Driver's Ed, so the less I have to explain, the better."

"If I mention I haven't had much time to fix it because I'm doing this in addition to going to law school, will that help?" Sam asked.

"Yes!" Kathy said, nodding. "They respect lawyers." She paused and reconsidered. "Err...what kind of law degree are you pursuing?"

There was a definite hierarchy in her parents' minds, with constitutional law students at the top and ambulance chasers bringing up the rear.

"I haven't decided yet, but I'd like to be able to defend people who can't afford it. I can lie about that too if I need to," Sam said, pointing to himself. "Future lawyer."

Kathy hung her head a bit. "I feel bad asking you to lie about so much for me," she admitted. "But...yeah. Sorry. That probably wouldn't hurt. Otherwise Dad'll write you off as being some stupid, idealistic kid or something."

Sorry, Sam. Had she said sorry yet? She should probably say it a few more times just to be safe.

"Uhh, what were you going to say the class is about? It's, umm, probably something we should be on the same page about."

"Trust me, you're not asking me to lie more than I ever have before, and it's for a good reason," Sam insisted. "What do you want me to say the class is about? What might make your parents happy to hear you're taking?"

"Anything with Advanced, Honors, or AP in front of it," Kathy admitted. "Anything that sounds like it'll get me into the Iviest of Ivy Leagues. A pre-law course, maybe? I mean, they want me to be a doctor, but saying I'm taking this just to see if I like it probably wouldn't hurt?"

"Okay, that sounds good. And hey, doctors need to understand their rights like anyone else," Sam said, giving her what he hoped was a reassuring smile. "It'll be okay, don't worry. The weekend will fly by, I'm sure."

He wasn't going to ask what would happen when graduation rolled around.

Kathy wasn't going to worry about graduation until after spring break. Or maybe prom. Otherwise, she'd just make herself crazy.

"Thanks," she said, giving him a grateful smile. "I really, super appreciate this, you don't even know. And I promise, I'll pay you back by being the best student I can, really."

IT IS OFFICIALLY PUMPKIN MONTH! BEHOOOOOOLD THE GREAT PUMPKIN!

Bees aren't nearly strong enough to hold an adequate pumpkin.
