Magical Bestiary | Tuesday, period 2

When Bob showed up in class this week he was somewhat disgruntled.

Not that anybody could probably tell the difference.

"Right. Well, we're now a week behind, thanks to Harry's utter inability to speak to the fair folk without saying precisely the wrong thing." He sighed. "So, rather than speak of any one magical creature this week, we're going to talk about ways to handle all of them."

He wrote in the air: 1. THINK

"Please don't forget this one," he said with a long-suffering look. "Don't just blindly strike out at things - find out what they are and what they want."

2. ASK.

"You may have noticed a pattern in earlier classes of how to handle various beings, which often comes down to asking them what they want."

3. TRUST CAREFULLY.

"Look, I won't say don't ever trust anything supernatural - for one thing, we'd just be getting into a whole logical paradox which is not the purpose of this class, but please exercise a bit of healthy skepticism, all right? Beings may be dishonest, honest but misinformed, or honest but coerced. Please try to be careful."

He looked to the heavens for patience. "And please, please remember - deals and agreements are often magically binding. Never agree to anything unless you're prepared to do it, and be very, very careful of the wording." Harry.

"So, today, let's discuss - a lovely being in need shows up on your doorstep. They're in trouble. What do you do?"

Please don't just say "help them blindly". Bob had had enough of that lately.

"Oh, I don't know. That would depend on what they wanted," Merrill admitted. "I was just curious, that's all."
