The students had all received ~~handwavey~~ letters and emails telling them to meet in town today, with directions to Demon Marcus. "Fashion," Ghanima began. "You may have noticed by now that there is a wide variety of clothing worn at Fandom. We are a mesh of many cultures, and it is reflected in the fashions worn at school and about town."

"And for some of those cultures, fashion may have more significance than in others," Tahiri added. Her half-grin was self-deprecating; she'd hardly be the first person to argue that the Jedi robes she wore were particularly fashionable, unless you thought that many drab shades of brown made some kind of compelling design statement. So she wasn't exactly going to be an authority on the subject. "Someone's clothing may have a symbolic meaning, or reflect their status in society, or be designed to be practical for their everyday lives. Or it may just be what they want to wear. Of course, there's no reason it can't be any combination of those things."

Ghanima, by contrast, was actually wearing jeans and a tank-top today, instead of her usual Imperial gowns. "For those of us from decidedly different worlds, sometimes one or two outfits in the back of our closet can be useful, if we have to go off-island," she pointed out. "My eyes stand out if I'm visiting the mainland, so I have invested in some basic pieces that do not immediately mark me as 'Other.'"

"It is perfectly acceptable for ladies to wear pants in this place and time, or even shorts," she continued. "Men in skirts is less-common, unless it is a particular style known as the 'kilt', and bathing costumes for the beach are available for both sexes. Jewelry is also acceptable for all genders."

"Wear whatever makes YOU feel comfortable. Don't let your classmates dictate what you should or should not wear, or push you into a fashion statement you are not comfortable with. Peer pressure is not acceptable, even with something as supposedly innocuous as clothing."

Tahiri nodded her agreement, then tucked her hands behind her back. "But that's enough from us. As we've mentioned, there's a lot of different fashions at your disposal in a place like Fandom, and we thought we'd let you explore some of the options today."

"I have left my credit chip with the gentleman at the desk," Ghanima said crisply. "If you find something that is perfect for you, or that you'd be willing to wear and try that's more to this era than where you come from, put it on my account."

Sometimes, it was nice to be the Empress and not need to worry about your credit.

Which was good, since Tahiri would have done the same thing if she could have, but Jedi weren't exactly rolling in credits. So she just smiled, waved a hand at the clothes racks, and said, "Okay, go on, take a look around. And if you've got any questions, Sparkle over there is willing to field them."

Mara arched her eyebrows. "Yes, your style is definitely something."

Something Mara wasn't brave enough to try, for one.

To be fair, at least part of Isabela's current style was 'most practical thing to flee the house in the middle of the night and sail away in'. She'd been rather short on options.

"They're big on pants here. You'll want a decent pair of those," she said, flipping though the racks of trousers. Men's trousers, they didn't lie about if they had pockets or not.

"Find the shortest ones they have," Mara said a little wryly. "I'm little."

"And adorable," Isabela replied as she picked out a pair of black trousers. "Here, they're shorter in the leg, but still too long to be breeches."

Mara disappeared back into the changing room. "These aren't so bad," she said, shoving her hands into the useful pockets.

"Much as I'd appreciate the view otherwise, I'll find you a shirt to go with it," Isabela said. "Any preferences?"

Otherwise you'd be likely to end up with to strips of cloth over your breasts and not much else.

"Something with sleeves, please," Mara asked.

For the storage of ~~vibloblades~~ hair things. And stuff.

"Whatever you say, sweet thing."

Isabela had just found a shirt with both sleeves and a decent neckline in a green that'd go nicely with Mara's hair when she saw it "Oh, my."

"Oh my good?" Mara asked, poking her head out of the dressing room with her body fully clothed. (No need to give the class a show...)

(Not even a poor pirate who hadn't seen a pair of breasts that weren't her own for simply ages?)

"Oh my very good," Isabela replied, offering Mara the shirt so she could grab the jacket. Her jacket with any luck.

Mara took the shirt with a smile of thanks. "That's a gorgeous jacket for you."

"I know," Isabela said as she tried the jacket on for fit. "The colour even matches my scarves. How's it look?"

"Like it was made for you," Mara said, grinning.

"Let's hope it's not priced like it was for the sake of the teacher's purse." Isabela might feel almost guilty then, since Ghanima didn't seem likely to parade them around afterwards as a show of her wealth.

"I think it will be all right," Mara said, chewing her lower lip. "How much is it?"

Isabela checked the tag. "I'm still working out the actual value of currency here." They had paper notes, and the coins weren't made of the right metals, and she wasn't even sure what was going on with the fractions. "It doesn't have that many numbers, though." Three before the dot seemed reasonable for leather that felt sturdy and supple, right?

"Then I think you're fine," Mara said.

Of course, she worked for the Emperor, so her idea of expensive was kind of...skewed.

Isabela had drunk more sovereigns worth of wine at her wedding than Luis had paid her mother for her (not that she'd bothered holding out for a higher price). She hoped Ghanima's idea of expensive was closer to an Antivan merchant's than a Rivaini conwoman's.

"If worst comes to worst, well, I am a pirate." A stolen jacket would match the stolen ship.

Mara snickered. "No wonder the coat called to you."
