Creative Inspirations | Monday, period one

When today's class had been asked to meet on the Causeway, there had been no special instructions, no strange vehicle in wait for them to take them somewhere strange and exotic and dangerous. Just Jonothon and Hannibal, waiting near an open portal, like so many classes before this one, back in the summer sessions.

Jono, at least, was looking pretty pleased about all of this. He liked today's inspiration of choice.

//Morning, class,// he greeted, giving the students a nod. //Today, we're going to be taking in another man-made wonder, and one that's rather close to my heart.// Please nobody mention how his heart had been left behind in bits and pieces all over a coat room in London somewhere, thank you. //Today, we're going to the library.//

Hannibal looked equally pleased with today's jaunt, though his content expression was somewhat marred by a still-healing black eye and bruised jaw. He was in a very nice suit and looking as suave as possible to compensate. Or at least to avoid looking like an unsavory character. "Specifically, we're going to the Abbey Library of Saint Gall, in Switzerland. It's one of the oldest and most beautiful in Europe, so I'm told. There is evidence of a library there as early as 820, and its collection has become renowned over the years; it has been declared a World Heritage site."

//If you have any sense of appreciation for beautiful things that persevere, you might find yourself awed by the architecture and the books alike,// Jono added. //But please, be respectful of both. Much of what you'll see is very literally priceless, and libraries deserve respect.//

"If you have any questions, please let us know." Hannibal nodded at Cosette. "Most of the staff will speak French, and some will know English as well," he told the others, "although if you know German, that will be easiest." Hannibal knew them all, naturally.

After making certain there were no questions, he waved them through the portal.

Once they ping in.

At the library, Hannibal was going to wander around taking it in, picking up books from time to time to admire or read.

In the classroom, he'd be sketching the place from memory.

Alluka took a break from princessing around (totally an accurate term!) to sidle on over to Hannibal. If he'd let her, she was going to take hold of his hand.

"Were you in a fight?" she asked curiously and not the least bit concerned.

Hannibal squeezed her hand and gave her a reassuring smile. "Of a sort, yes." Being kidnapped was a sort of fight, wasn't it? "But Jono and his friend saved me."

Being kidnapped was totally like a fight!

She beamed up at him, showing no indication of letting his hand go. "If you hadn't been saved, then you'd have missed class!" The most important thing, clearly. "It's good that Jono saved you. Did he come running when you called"

"He came running even though I didn't call," Hannibal confided.

She gasped, but it was an excited gasp, not a concerned one.

"But, but how did he know?!"

Was Jono magic? Jono was totally magic, right?

Jono was definitely magic. But mostly in ways Hannibal wouldn't discuss with a student.

"Somebody told him," Hannibal said. "And he knew I was in trouble."

Especially not with Alluka, honestly, of all students!

"Oh."

The way she was thinking that through was practically visible in her expression.

"You were a hostage?"

"I was kidnapped for information," Hannibal corrected. One of these days he really was going to have to chat with Alluka and determine how much she knew about her family's business and how sheltered she'd been.

That would be a fun chat!

"Ooooh," she said, wobbling on her feet before frowning. "Does that mean if Jono hadn't come you'd have died?"

"I very much doubt it," Hannibal answered. He'd had those two halfway to killing each other themselves already. "I might have been more bruised, though."

Alluka giggled.

"Because you were winning anyway?"

Jono's time in the library was mostly spent gazing upwards, drinking in the sight of the richly painted ceilings while soaking in the atmosphere of a beautiful room full of beautiful books.

After their return to the classroom, he'd reached for a pencil and a sheet of paper, and now he was writing. Maybe lyrics, maybe poetry. At the end of the day, the two weren't all that different.

Incoming hug, Jono! WOOOSH!

"Elsa says I can be a princess for Halloween!"

What? As if she'd been going to forget about that!

Oh, hey! Jono was quite happy to hold open his arms and give her a big squeeze.

//Does she, now? Well, it's good to know you've got permission,// he replied, amused. //I suppose she'd know?//

He was vaguely aware that there was at least one actual princess in the school these days. He assumed Alluka must've gone to ask about Halloween to one of them.

"Uh huh," she said happily, making that hug of hers nice and squishy. He was her Jono, after all. "Elsa's gonna be a queen and so, so I needed to know if it was okay because I would die if I made a real princess mad."

Okay, she wouldn't actually die. But it would be Deeply Tragic.

That would be pretty unfortunate, wouldn't it? Jono certainly didn't want Alluka to die, either. Because she was a tiny ball of sunshine and nobody was allowed to make her die, and he'd hate to cause some sort of international incident on account of one dead student and the resulting regicide that might very well follow.

//Well, then it's doubly good to know that she's fine with you being a princess,// he decided. //I think you'd be a perfectly lovely princess, at that.//

Alluka laughed, completely unaware of the fate that had narrowly missed Elsa.

"I want to be a princess," she said. "And Sholeh said I could even be a fairy princess!"

Because added glitter and wings would only be more fun, yes? Yes!

//Sholeh! She was around and I missed her?//

Damn, this weekend had been too busy, and he'd completely missed the chance to touch base with some of his old students.

//I hope she's doing well, though that's a bloody brilliant idea, at that. Would you like to go costume shopping sometime soon, then? We can get you wings, and a dress, and a crown... and... other... fairy princess things.//

Jono had never been a fairy princess. That was about as far as his knowledge went, in that regard.

"And a wand," she said helpfully, and probably half the store once she saw her options. Have fun fighting that fight, Jono! "I would love to go! And, and Sholeh was in the library, so maybe she'll be in the library again if you want to see her?"

Alluka hadn't really figured out the whole 'visiting for a weekend bit' despite being told. She'd had important princess stuff to think about instead.

//Maybe,// Jono replied, thoughtfully. //She was always rather fond of the library.//

He wasn't going to hold his breath, for reasons besides the obvious. But he always liked an excuse to stop by anyway.

//So, a dress, a crown, some wings, and a wand. Sounds like a lovely costume. We can pick a day, make our way to the clothing shop, and get you something that'll suit a fairy princess right and proper.//

Or make big sad eyes at whoever worked there for some assistance, because like hell Jono knew about fairy princesses.

Alluka was the best at sad eyes! She could help!

"Yes!" she cheered. "And then candy after all of that!"

//And then candy after all of that,// Jono agreed, because he had a rubber arm and a soft spot for adorable children.

What a pushover.

"Yay! Thank you! I love you!"

Alluka squeezed him again and then let go to dance backwards and do a spin.

"I'll be the very best princess ever!"
