Hunting 101, Thursday

When the students arrived to class today, they would find a variety of materials laid out on a table at the front of the classroom - bottles of table salt, jars of water, boxes of matches, coils of rope, and metal stakes, among other household-looking items.

"Hey guys. Before we get into too much detail about the types of creatures that might need to be hunted, I figured we'd take a look at some tools, and put together a kit for you to use in class, and outside if it ends up being necessary," he said. "A lot of this probably looks like it should be in camping gear, or at least a kitchen, and you're not wrong. If you're going to defend yourself or others, you don't always need a lot of fancy equipment, and a lot of household materials can have multiple purposes. Salt will keep a lot of things from entering a room if you line it at the door. These jars are holy water, liberated from the church - uh, please don't tell anyone who might work there. Moving on, matches can do all kinds of things. There are a lot of creatures who are susceptible to fire... but that includes us, so you have to be careful when you're lighting something up." Sam went through and explained some of the uses of the rest of the tools, and then motioned to a pile of canvas bags.

"I want you to make yourself a kit using anything on the table," he said. "You can pick some of everything if you want, or leave certain things out, but if you leave something out, I'm probably going to ask why. Just a heads up."

It made perfect sense to Lottie that many things would be repelled by salt. Clearly they'd heard all about the dangers of hypertension!

Four looked a little wide-eyed at the explanation for the salt, but was conscientious about putting a little bit of everything into his kit.

Plus knives. He might personally prefer to use a gun, but he was scarily good with throwing knives, too, and maybe there was something about the metal? Or something? Supernatural stuff was still out of his realm of expertise.

Lottie grabbed lots of salt and matches.

And then several metal stakes. She tried twirling one like a baton.

Everyone should probably stand back.

Kaylin shrugged and put everything in her kit. If the teacher said she might need it, who was she to argue. At least, at this point in time.

Salt, matches, holy water, a little camping lantern... Ada scrunched up her nose as she dug through things, looking for what she wanted.

She finally came up with a few metal tent stakes, and shrugged and put them in. She'd never gotten knife-throwing lessons from any of the cousins who did blade tricks, but she knew how to take a sharp-ish thing and jam it into someone's soft-bits.

Frank started looking through the supplies. He grabbed plenty of chalk. He passed on the holy water because there were enough liquids he considered much more sacred. He took salt and spread it around the rim of his glass...

Yes, he had a margarita. It was one of those liquids he held more sacred than the water.
