Class met up in the danger shop rather than a classroom. It had been programmed into a warehouse with enough levels and things to hide behind for practice combat. Which, you know, might have been for a reason.

Just saying.

"Welcome to Teamwork and Tactics," Washington said, eyeing his class critically from behind the helmet. So, it mostly just looked like he was glancing in their general direction. "Some of you I've had before, but some of you are new. I'm Agent Washington and I'll be your teacher. First order of business will be laps. Five laps around the room."

No, he wasn't kidding about that. Sorry kids, it was leg day now.

Only once the laps were done with did Wash bring out some nice armor in either red or blue for the students to put on and collection of paintball guns for them to choose from.

"Today you'll be working in teams to try and eliminate your opponents. The teams are based off the color of the armor you chose and you'll receive coordinating colored ammo as well." A beat. "Please don't shoot yourselves with the paintballs. The armor will protect your from most damage, but you will still feel it and it will still sting. Once the exercise is complete, we'll have introductions."

Because practical experience was much more fun!

Nathan was covered in paint but he didn't mind it that much. At least it hadn't gotten in his eyes.

"Nathan Byrn," he said once it came to be his turn. "Senior.

That was what the helmets were for. Well, that and preventing a concussion. Because Wash was pretty sure he'd get sued if that happened.

"Nice to meet you, Nathan. Why are you taking this class?"

Nathan shrugged which he knew wasn't a great answer.

"I've been on my own for most of my life," he said. "Maybe I need to learn how to work with other people since I figure I'll need some help at some point."

"Self reliance can also be a good tactic," Wash pointed out. "One person is sometimes able to accomplish what a group can't."

YOU KNOW. JUST SAYIN'.

"But working in a team also allows you to fill in your weaknesses with other people's strengths."

"Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, junior," she said, wiping a few paint splotches off her face mask. "The class was fun last time, and it never hurts to stay in practice."

"Good to see you again, Tali," Wash replied. "You... thought it was fun?"

Oh god, you made his day almost as much as a cat.

Yes. Even with the totally suspicious AI.

"Sure." Tali shrugged. "It's interesting working with people who aren't used to thinking in terms of combat tactics. It's different, you know? Pretty creative."

Hey. Hey. Delta was okay.

The other AIs sucked, though. Wash was down with some AI distrust.

"Keeps you on your toes, yes," Wash replied. "Did you hope to learn anything new in this semester?"

Look, you just never knew if they were going to win the war and kick you off your planet, never mind that you were the one who gave them mobile bodies and attacked them first.

"I'm open to learning a lot of new things." Tali spread her hands in an attempt to (probably unnecessarily) illustrate the whole 'a lot' concept. "Working together to take down one thing that's much bigger -- that could come in handy."

Purely hypothetically, of course. Of course.

Well, maybe don't do that. Also, please never meet The Meta. It would just end in tears. Murderous tears.

"How much bigger?"

Liiiiiiiiiiiiiittle too late for that, Wash. Like a few generations too late.

"I was thinking on the scale of a large mech. Heavy firepower, better mobility than that time you had us fight a tank over the summer?"

Well, clearly they needed Wash around back then. To be surly about things.

Wash gave that some thought. "I can figure something out," he said, thinking of a MANTIS (http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/rvb/images/1/1b/Caboose_and_Freckles_outside.png/revision/latest?cb=20130730001216) class assault droid. Those could be an issue even for a trained operative.

Face was covered in less paint than he could have been and more than he'd liked.

"Face, senior, I like learning new ways of avoiding people shooting at me." Oddly enough, not provoking them into it wasn't high on the list.

"I can't imagine why that would be a problem for you."

Wash was a terrible teacher sometimes. His sarcasm just got the better of him on occasion.

"It's a mystery." He hadn't even done anything that time he'd been shot in the face for real. By his supposed rescuers.

Worst rescuers ever. Of all time.

"With or without a team?"

"Both seem useful," Face said with a shrug.

Mara was absolutely covered in paint because she wasn't going to be showing how skilled she actually was to anyone just yet, thank you.

"I'm Mara Jade," she said through her helmet. "I'm a sophomore, and I'm in this class because I really love doing laps?"

No one loved doing laps. No one.

"Uh...huh." Feel the force of Wash's judgement. "Nice to meet you, Mara."

Mara gave him her perkiest smile. "Of course."

"Was there anything you wanted to learn in this class?" Hopefully not another person who wanted to fight an assault droid. They were the worst.

"Working in teams," Mara said. "I'm kind of...not good at that."

What with being a secret lone assassin and all.

A bunch of loners and assassins. It was like Project Freelancer all over again!

"It takes practice and being able to trust your teammates."

Which. You know.

"Eric Bittle, sophomore, and I'm here because someone, somewhere, thinks I need projectiles thrown at me on a weekly basis." If you couldn't tell from his expression, his own opinion was that he did not need this.
