Today, for the very first time, Brian's class would be meeting in--gasp--a classroom. "Hey, guys!" Brian said cheerfully once his students had all arrived. "I'm Mr. O'Conner, and I'm your teacher for this semester. This class is going to be--practical, but I'm assuming you all already know how to drive a car. If you don't, well...when we get into simulations, you'd better learn real quick. If you don't know what a car is, I'm not sure how much I can help you.

"So. A couple of pieces of business. First, I'm going to need a TA, so if anyone's interested hit me up after class. Second, paperwork." Brian passed out some booklets and diagrams. "The manual, there may or may not be a test on at some point, and you'll need to know it to get your driver's license if you don't already have it. The engine, learn and love, people. Third, introductions. I know, I know, you're probably sick of it, but tough. I need to know who some of you are. So tell me your name, your year, and what kind of car you're driving. If you don't have a car, tell me your dream car. I'm Mr. O'Conner and I'm driving a Mitsubishi Lancer. Don't egg it. I'll know it was you. Now, what about you?" he asked one of the students at random.

"I'm Blue Sargent," Blue said. "I'm a junior and I just got a car so I can go visit my family on the weekends. It's a Honda Civic. I think it's from 1997." She looked faintly alarmed about this, yes.

"Is that the one in the parking lot with one green side panel?" Brian asked sympathetically.

"...it was like that when I got it."

"I'm Maria DeLuca and I'm a sophomore. Back home I drive a Jetta and I'm not sure what my dream car is."

She liked cars, but she didn't know what her dream one would be. She had a dream guitar, Brian.

Volkswagens were not exactly Brian's thing, but hey, everyone had to start somewhere. And he didn't speak guitars. "Well, maybe think about it some more," he suggested.

"I'll do some research after I'm done with the homework," she promised him.

"I'm Face, I'm a senior, and I don't have a car," Face said. "I don't really have a dream on either, I'm more interested in ships."

"We're not doing ships in this class," Brian told him. "You may be in for a world of disappointment."

Face shrugged. "I like driving this planet's vehicles just fine." Especially when they went fast. "I just can't tell the differences like I could with ships or even speeders."

"I'm Four and I'm a senior, but I don't have a car. I mostly take public transportation," Four said. The public transportation didn't stop ever, but details! "I'm not that picky about what I'd drive, though. If it had gas and working brakes, I'm good."

"That's tragic," Brian informed him, because seriously, Four, public transportation?

"I'm Alana, I'm also a senior, and I don't have a car," Alana said. "I'd like something little, red and fast."

"Import or domestic?" Brian asked.

"I'm really not a car expert," Alana admitted. "Which is better?"

"I'm Kathy, I'm a senior, and I'll probably take whatever I can afford," she said. "My dad drives a Subaru from the 90s, so if I end up going to college in LA, I'll probably end up driving that."

She looked distressed. She still didn't know much about cars, but she knew she liked fast ones. Which--best of luck with that in LA anyway.

You could have an excellent time with a fast car in LA. Brian was an expert on the subject. "Well, I mean--" No. He could not say anything nice about a Subaru from the nineties. "It's a start?"

"It's free?" Kathy said, shrugging. "That's kinda the best I can do right now. Better than LA's excuse for public transportation?"

"I'm Kira Yukimura, I'm a junior, and my dream car is a Mini Cooper," she said. "I know it's not like, the most powerful car around, but it's fast and you can park it anywhere, which is really important when you drive around New York City and have to park in whatever space you can get."

"The Mini Cooper has much to recommend it," Brian said. They didn't really meet his standards for speed, but, "In maneuverability it's hard to top something that size."
