"Good afternoon!" Lito said to his students, once they were all assembled in the front row of the auditorium, because seriously, this was drama, what did they need a regular classroom for? "I am Mr. Rodriguez, and I will be your teacher. I'm afraid I am a bit new at this, so please bear with me. Now, drama is an art form, yes? It's about making people believe something is real that isn't. It's about...well, it's about lying. So that is what you're going to do this week. You're going to lie to me. It's an improvisation exercise. Introduce yourselves. Give me your real name, because I need to check you off on this roster, but anything else that comes out of your mouth should not be true, and it should be convincing. I, for example, am a pharmacist from Barcelona who was recently working in San Francisco, before I discovered my passion for the stage." He sounded very convincing, and stood one hundred percent prepared, with some assistance, to convince them this was true. Or they could Google him on their phones. "Now, you," he said, picking a student at random. "Who are you?"

"I'm not good at this kind of thing!" Kathy hissed. "If I don't figure stuff out up front, I'm going to blank in the middle of my explanation!"

"You're too tense," Raven decided. "We're definitely going to work on you learning how to relax."

"I'm going to the onsen after class?" Kathy said, hoping that counted.

...Granted, it was to put her back into fighting shape but, c'mon! It was lounging in a hot spring. How could that not count?

"Ooo, that's a pretty good plan! Are you going with anyone?"

A boy, perhaps? Boys and onsens seemed like a good plan to Raven.

"I was probably going to send some texts to see if anybody was up for it...?" Kathy said.

Her brain had not gone to boys. Her brain was currently in academic mode, with a side helping of 'Ack! Something I am not good at! Failure imminent!' for their current assignment.

"You should come along too! Celebrate the beginning of the new semester?"

So that was definitely a "no" on boys, then.

"That could be fun! I've actually never been to it before."

Some boys would probably be on the mass invite text...?

THIS WAS WHY SHE NEEDED YOU, RAVEN, SEE?

"You should come along," Kathy wheedled. "Great place for relaxing, though I generally don't stay too long because you can't really read or do homework while immersed in a hot spring."

Which just meant Raven had to come now. Otherwise Kathy would cut her relaxation short to study and they couldn't have that, now could they?

"Kathy." By the look on Raven's face, she was thinking the same thing. "It's the first day of senior year."

"I know, right?!"

It was possible this meant different things to the two of them.

"How can you even have any homework?!"

"I'm taking six extra credits, five of which are AP classes," Kathy said. "I had homework before classes even began! I have two assignments due on Friday!"

One was a 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation,' to be written entirely in Spanish using advanced vocabulary, the other was a dialectical journal about Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Women."

"No wonder you don't know how to relax."

"I just mentioned visiting the onsen," Kathy pointed out. "How is that not relaxing?"

Your motives, Kathy. Motives.

"You also want to leave early because you can't do your homework there."

"Only when I'm by myself," Kathy protested. "I get bored! What do you do when you're by yourself and you don't have a book to read?"

Homework was clearly the only answer here!

"Daydream."

"But then your homework doesn't get done."

And she daydreamed plenty! Just...responsibly.

"Sure it does." Mostly. Sometimes. "Just not because I'm bored."

"Well, no, of course not. You don't just do homework because you're bored. It's an important responsibility. But if I'm bored and I have responsibilities, doesn't it just make sense to kill two birds with one stone?"

Kathy frowned. "That is such a morbid saying."

"Haven't you ever just not done anything?"

"All the time!" Kathy said, pouting at her. "I read comics, I play video games, I take naps. I do nothing all the time!"

"No, you just listed three things that you do a lot. That's not doing nothing."

"Okay, what do you consider doing nothing?" Kathy asked.

"Staring into space and letting your mind wander."

"Okay, yeah," Kathy admitted, tucking her hair behind her ear. "I don't do that a whole lot. My parents never really approved of wool-gathering. I guess I never got good at it?"
