Adventuring! Tuesday, Period 3

"So Hardison couldn't be here for class today," Raven said when everyone seemed to be gathered. "He had some things he needed to do at home." She wasn't smirking. You're smirking. "So congratulations, you get me, instead.

"Now, I don't actually know all that much about D&D and the classes that he's been talking about, but I do know about fashion. And since in my time it's only been a little while since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in England, I know a little bit about at least one sort of character: royalty."

Raven pressed a few buttons -- thank god the Danger Shop had such straight forward controls -- and a couple racks of clothing came springing out.

"So we're going to play dress up again, today. I want you to create a royal character. A princess, a queen, a king. Maybe a tsar or an empress or a duke. Are they a tragic figure, doomed by their title? Are they a warrior? A diplomat? A figurehead or a tyrant? Are they king of a nation or maybe king of the fairies? The pirate queen or the queen of darkness? Pick an outfit and tell us all about it."

Raven gestured to a table absolutely glittering with jewels and shiny metal. "And don't forget to accessorize," she said. "After all, royalty just isn't royalty without the right headgear."

There's things for male type royalty and female type royalty, but Raven won't be keeping track of who goes for which. . . .

Are they a good ~~witch~~ ruler or a bad ~~witch~~ ruler?

Hanna had opted for a warrior queen (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/343610646547809022/). Surprise, surprise.

"We are fighting to take back our country from invaders, and to keep the populace safe," she'd decided. "I am the general of the armies, but there are several field marshals whom I rely on."

"An active leader! That's what I like to hear," Raven said. "What do you think of your chances of beating the enemy back?"

Hanna smothered a grin to try and look solemn. "We may prevail, because we know the territory, and its secrets. But I am afraid the people may suffer before the enemy is beaten back." She considered. "I am tempted to take the war into their lands, in order to prevent this from happening again."

Last week's events may have had an influence on that.

"I do not believe I shall marry. I'll need to decide on an heir before we continue this war."

"Good plan. If the worst happens, you don't want to leave a power vacuum and upset the stability of your country in a time of crisis."

Hanna gave a firm nod, then said, "I do not think I would wish to have a throne in real life. Far too much paperwork. Too many rules." She smiled a little. "To be a warrior or barbarian queen, over a smaller people-- that might be something to enjoy. A queen who goes out with her armies." She paused and asked, "Would you be more like Queen Elizabeth?"

"Honestly, her life was more attractive when she was just a princess. But I was a lot more shallow then, too." Raven smiled ruefully. "I'm with you. It's fun to pretend and fantasize, but I think if I actually had that responsibility I'd just screw it all up. I could be the leader of a rogue band of brigands, maybe. That could be fun."

Hanna giggled slightly, and picked up a gold circlet, balancing it on her head. "The dresses are beautiful," she said a little wistfully. "But you do not need to be a queen to have those. I think I would like... oh, to have the power to change things," she decided. "But that isn't so much these days, it seems. To be queen of a tribe, that would be enough power, without all of the rules, I think."

"You'd be making all your own rules instead."

"Yes." She added delicately, "Hardison was busy today?" Ahem?

Raven grinned. "That's what he told me. He didn't go into details."

He just stuttered a lot and said something about gossip and ice cream.

"That was considerate of him." Hanna looked like she wanted to giggle. "I suppose there could be dusting. Or, computer upgrades that should be done."

It was one hour of the day to attend class. Hmmmm.

Raven tried not to smirk too hard. "Well, he was involved in that whole thing last week. So he has a lot to catch up on."

"Of course." Hanna hummed and picked up a sword. "He's probably tired."

From sleeping in one of those pods.

"I missed most of it. But you were gone too. Were you in the ship?"

"Yeah. It was pretty creepy."

"I'm sorry," Hanna grimaced. "I was gone for part of the week. And by the time I got back..." Hacking was not her skillset. "I'm glad you escaped, though. Very glad."

Kaylin found all of this silly. She had thought Hardison was just perhaps a bit crazy, but she didn't think Raven was. Which meant this was some other thing.

"People actually like this dressing up thing?" She asked, honestly confused now. "Teachers don't just do it to torture us? And why do people like it?"

"Do you ever wish you could be someone you're not?" Raven asked her.

"I want to be a Hawk," Kaylin said, who was nothing if not nauseatingly consistent and singleminded about her goal. "And sometimes I wish I was a better person, but I don't think putting on strange clothes would help with that."

If it wasn't practical (or fun like flying), she didn't get it.

"Except it could. Putting on different clothes makes you feel different, right? Sometimes it's not a good sort of different, but if you find the right ones it can be. Clothes can make you move differently and think differently than you might otherwise. If you wear clothes someone else might wear, you can start to feel some of what they might feel." Was it any surprise that the shapeshifter thought a lot about how form helped change identity? "You want to be a Hawk. What sorts of things do Hawks wear?"

Kaylin gave her a weird look and gestured at what she was wearing. "This. Basically. With the Hawk's tabard."

"Is that why you wear it?"

Kaylin shrugged. "Sort of. But mostly it's comfortable and I can move in it and I don't have to think about anything. I have a plain dress back home, but I don't like it."

She has no idea what she's doing.

I may have spent a lot of time this evening down a "historical finery" k-hole.

Pinterest hates me (and the feeling is mutual). I won't sign in for an account so I only get about three seconds before it basically blacks out the whole screen on me.

No worries. Pinterest and I have a long standing hate-hate relationship, but everyone else I know seems to love it. And sometimes I'm willing to fight with it and the 4+ logins it makes me do before it acknowledges me and the 7 more times it makes me go back to the beginning link before it accepts that, no, I really don't want to go somewhere else instead. No one else seems to have these issues, so I think it just hates me. But I accept that it seems to love others and they find it very handy.

And... It's Kaylin. Who isn't going to dress up unless a teacher says she has to. She likes Raven, but she doesn't get this whole pretending thing.
