[Class #3 - the Hanging Ten Job]

Another day, another portal -- this time to the West Coast, somewhere in California.

They gathered on a secluded stretch of beach between rocky outcroppings. A series of different shaped surf boards stood upright in the sand, and large, reasonably paced waves crashed against the shore. Eliot walked over to greet an aging hippie sort of man in a rash guard and board shorts.

"Hope you all brought your swimsuits," Eliot said. "Today we're all going to learn how to surf. This here is our guide, since neither Parker nor I has actually done this before."

“But we watched a lot of Youtube videos!” Some of which had really weird soundtracks. Or a lot of people drinking Red Bull. “So we’re going to be learning too.” She grinned at their guide. “Thanks for doing this, these are our students. They’re very good at taking risks.”

"That's definitely good when it comes to surfing," the man said. "We're going to start out with some basics here on the sand before we get into the water, but we'll get you all riding the waves soon enough. You have trouble anywhere along the way, just yell for Gordon and I'll be right over to assist." He clapped his hands together and smiled at the class. "Alright, everyone grab a board and let's get started, huh?"

You’re somewhere between Santa Clara and Santa Carla.

Surfing, huh? Ringo had bever tried it before, but it did look pretty fun. So she was paying attention, and bouncing slightly in excitement.

How come this class was so awesome?

Daphne grinned when she spotted her and moved closer.

"Surfing is one of my favorite things."

"Really?" Ringo grinned. "I've never done it before, but it sure looks fun!" Maybe Daphne could give her some pointers!

"It really is," Daphne said with an enthusiastic nodding of her head. "I've entered contests with it."

Daphne would be happy to give pointers.

"Wow!" Rungo looked impressed. "What is involved in competing? Is it just who stays up the longest?"

"I've got sunscreen!" Kathy called out, holding bottles of both the lotion and spray on variety. "Just a reminder that you also get UV rays bouncing back off the water out there, so you'll burn a lot faster than you would on dry land!"

Kathy was totally the mom-friend.

It had been a while since Jalian had surfed - she wasn't much of a fisher by nature - but...well, pardon her if she were a bit distracted. This area was more than a little familiar.

Get to know the basics (http://learnsurfschool.com/) or jump on and start horsing around! Gordon'll encourage you to take it slow and grab your first few waves lying down, to get a feel for it all -- but no one's likely to stop Parker from leaping in whole hog.

There are life vests for those who want them/aren't certain of their swimming ability. And towels for anyone who'd prefer to lie down and catch some rays.

Ringo felt a bit silly in a life vest, but she knew she wasn't the best swimmer. Besides, it didn't really get in her way too much, especially after having to get used to that armor in her teamwork class the first half of summer.

Once she was out on the water, Ringo learned two lessons. The sense of balance and control she'd picked up doing AirTrek translated pretty well to surfing. Also, water flowed quite differently than air. Ringo knew how to read and anticipate air currents. Waves were something else altogether. So it was definitely a good thing she had that vest on.

Though if Ringo's laughter were anything to go by, all the falling off was plenty fun on its own. And her whoop when she managed to ride a wave all the way in made it clear tgat she approved of today's class.

This was different from the windsurfing, but Cosette was more than game to give it a try.

She probably shouldn't have skipped past the beginning step of lying down on the board her first couple of tries, but she'd been so sure she had the hang of balancing on one of these boards already!

Not that the falling deterred her. She actually thought it was fun.

Alana did a few waves lying down, but only because she wanted to make sure she felt okay about surfing. Once she had her balance, she was up and enjoying the waves. Her balance wasn't anything pecial, but she was scrappy and determined, and even when she fell she was back up quickly.

Pffft, lying down. If Kathy wanted to lie down, she'd've stayed on the beach!

Again, her preternatural agility helped out with learning; her body automatically made the minute adjustments to keep her upright on the board. But it didn't help her out when the board tipped or slid out from under her feet, which meant that Kathy ended up in the water several times.

But she always came up laughing and reaching for her board to try again.

They’re here to learn too!

Parker was, as expected, diving in. Or rather, falling off the board. A lot. But she was having fun. Her natural balance worked for her; but trying to keep track of all the students at the same time didn't.

Enh, it was still a blast.

Like Parker, Eliot already had better than average balance and body control. Unlike Parker, he was much more used to using these while being very firmly grounded. By which he meant on the ground. Not water.

So he was taking it nice and slow at first, staying low and getting a feel for how the thing moved.

And wiping out.

A lot.

Well, at least the students wouldn't have to feel bad if/when they did too, right?

Maybe she knows how to surf. She’s from L.A., right?

Well, yeah, but Kathy's parents hadn't really been big on bringing her and Sarah down to the beach. Even swimming had mostly been restricted to trips to the Y. But that wasn't going to stop Kathy from grabbing a board and paddling out into the ocean to try it!

Also, feel free to wipe-out, and either yell for help here or just kind of wash up on the beach.
