Etiquette, Monday

If Obi-Wan had a single bit of sense left, he would not have been here, he was fairly certain. After all, the island had essentially taken him hostage last week, and now forced him back into a course he had had no plans to teach. He should have, by all means, gone back to Tatooine.

... and he had. For four days. Then the silence had become too much. Whatever progress he had made in making peace with himself, or at least the Living Force, had been dashed.

So it was a largely resigned-looking Obi-Wan who met the students in the Danger Shop, in what appeared to be a fairly normal meeting room.

"I suppose since we are all here, we might as well learn a few lessons about etiquette," he said. "We will begin at the beginning, of course. How to greet a stranger, especially a stranger you wish to do business with - or discuss diplomacy with - is an essential part of etiquette. One must exude polite interest at all times, and refrain from rolling one's eyes at least until the other party's back has turned."

... Not that he'd ever done that.

"There are many different ways to greet others across cultures, but this is the simplest form that most civilized sentient species adhere to," he continued. "You stand up when someone enters a room. You make eye contact. You offer them a polite smile, and then you shake their hand. Neither too firmly, nor too loosely-- the former might be seen as an assertion of dominance, and the second will make you look weak and uninterested. The handshake should last as long as it takes the both of you to state your names." A beat. "Shaking a tentacle is usually all right, but look into it first beforehand, just so nothing awkward happens."

Anakin.

"If you don't catch their name, ask them for it again - politely. Use it during the resulting conversation, but not too often."

He cleared his throat. "We'll go into the more complicated forms after I demonstrate this one," he said. "I expect you all to practice as well, when I'm finished. I believe this simulation has several simulated sentients in it who will respond appropriately to your actions."

He took a step towards the door. Someone knocked on the other side. "Observe," he said, and opened it.

"LAND SHARK!"

The giant foam shark behind the door chomped down and swallowed Obi-Wan whole.

Then the simulation glitched.
