Sneaking 101, Thursday

The first thing students would encounter upon entering the Danger Shop was a long, brick corridor. It was dark; in the distance, you could just about see the flicker of a torch, and some branching pathways: a left turn, a right, and a door to the right just in front of the split.

There was a note tacked to the wall, just illuminated enough to be readable: YOU WANT TO GO RIGHT. DON'T BE SEEN.

Well. That was clear enough, right?

Sneaking in.

But take care. At the end of the corridor isn't just a split: the door to the right is the entrance to a guard post. You can't hear them from here, but once you round the corner, you'll notice the giant window the guard is squinting through.

There's a torch opposite the window.

To the left is a maze of tiny rooms: living quarters and a furnace room. At the end of this maze is another door back into the corridor just past the window, but there is another guard patrolling this maze.

So you've got some choices before you.

Do you try to lockpick your way into the guard post and take out the guard? Do you find some way to quietly douse the torch so you can sneak past? Or do you chance the maze?

Or do something else?

...Atton's waiting, either for students to come sneaking in or for the NPC guards to haul them in.

"Hey," he announced, "Welcome to Sneaking 101. That was your first test. The next few weeks, we'll be working on some place a little more impressive."

He pointed to a student at random.

"You. Name, the reason why you're here, and one personal trait or skill that might work in your advantage when you're breaking into or out of some place."

Atton's there for you to talk to, of course.

So, sneaking? Not Tali's strong point, thus her presence in this class. She took a while to evaluate her options; she might have been overthinking it.

Quite a bit. For instance, she started contemplating the idea of putting out that torch somehow, and then ended up having to stop herself halfway through mentally designing a device to do it.

Tali decided to take her chances with the maze, which went fine for the most part, right up until she got caught by the guard at the end of it. Sigh.

"Bosh'tet," Tali muttered at the guard who herded her into the room, and you didn't have to see her face to know she was glaring at him as he left.

"Tali, and I think that pretty much explains why I'm here," she said. "My sneaking skills could definitely use some work."

When most of the action you saw involved walking into warehouses where people immediately started shooting at you, there wasn't much of a chance to practice being stealthy, okay?

"I'm pretty good at thinking on my feet. That's probably my biggest advantage there."

"Still got you arrested this time," Atton mused. "What would you do differently next time?"

Ezra Sagishi

Ezra was buttoning up his shirt when he sauntered in. Because of course he'd stripped and turned into a fox the first chance he got. It'd been easy to carry his clothes past the big window right underneath it when he was as small as he was as a fox.

"Ezra Sagishi, thought this would be an easy class, and I'm a natural at breaking into and out of places."

Face successfully came sneaking in. It was probably best not to ask how and why exactly he ended up covered in grease.

"Face, it sounded fun," he said cheerfully. "I'm told I'm okay at acting, which could be useful if there's people about."

"Neat trick," Atton said, a shrug in his voice. "That ever give out on you?"

"Ohhh. You're the kid from Pantolomin," Atton said, largely because he happened to have stopped by there with Sparks a couple of weeks ago and so at least the topic of Face was more or less fresh in his memory. "So you're a fast talker? That can either work in your favor, or get your ass thrown in with the rancors, depending."

Ezra's shrug was physical. And much more light and idle than it had any right to be.

"Nothing's foolproof."

"Hey, knowing is half the battle," Atton said. He glanced back towards the course. "So, 'easy', huh?"

Kathy Li

"Yup." He reconsidered for a second. "Sorry?"

He didn't seem all that sorry.

Tali huffed, annoyed with herself. "Not think quite so much," she admitted. "That guard snuck up on me while I got carried away trying to plan my next move."

Raven Darkholme

Raven shrunk down into a snake and kept low in the shadows along the bottom of the wall. It did make some investigating, like, say, looking through any windows, very hard to do.

But it also made it incredibly difficult for the guard looking through the window to see her, either.

Was creeping past as a snake cheating? Pfft, whatever. Raven was totally creeping past as a snake anyway.

If she got bored in later classes, she'd give a shot to doing the challenges without shapeshifting, but for the time being, she was just feeling pretty smug.
