Advanced Driver's Ed, Thursday, First Period

Once his class had assembled in the Danger Shop, Brian greeted them with a grin and, "I recognize all of you from last time, so we can skip the introductions, I think. Let's get to it." He pushed a button, and the Danger Shop transformed into a sunny, if empty street lined with palm trees. "Welcome to Miami." He pushed another button and six Mitsubishi Eclipses appeared in a neat row: white, black, silver, red, blue, and green. He'd considering upgrading them to Veyrons, but considering Thorin was in this class, he didn't think he could bear to see the inevitable result even in a simulation. "Your rides. Today, you will be racing a quarter mile. 'But Mr. O'Conner,'" he said in a falsetto, "'that's not very advanced.' If you were to pop the trunk of these fine machines, you would find they have been outfitted with tanks of NOS, which is the street name--and a brand name--for nitrous oxide. You may have encountered this fine chemical before, at the dentist. It's very versatile. The use that is relevant to our class is that it turbo charges engines. Temporarily. You each get one tank, that means one burst, triggered by the red button installed on your gearshift. Use it too soon and you'll fall behind before the finish. Use it too late and you won't get the full benefit. Since this takes some practice, we're going to reverse how things went in the last class. You're welcome to take a few rounds--through the magic of holograms, the start line is also the finish line even though you're going in a straight line, and after each round your tank will refresh itself--and then everyone will line up and race for real. Are there any questions?" After he'd paused to allow for said questions, he grinned again and said, "Then let's get to it."

Ronan didn't really need much practice but he took a few runs anyway. He'd used NOS before but not regularly so he took the time to familiarize himself with just this once.

Hands on the steering wheel and sharp grin appearing on his face, Ronan hit the gas and felt at home . Felt great. The car shot forward, gliding effortlessly and would have been the fastest if he didn't bump a curb.

He cursed. Loudly. And then hit the NOS to make up for time.

Face managed to compensate well enough for the jostling that came with using the NOS (kriffing lack of inertial dampers) in the practice rounds, but then overcompensated in the race, losing most of his newly gained speed in the process.

Kathy wasn't entirely sure about this. Not the speed--she was fine with speed. But she was a little concerned about her ability to control the car when it was flying down the street at speeds it had not been designed for. Yeah, practice was important today.

So all that practice? She hadn't bothered to check to find the best time to actually use the NOS. Which had her pushing it far too early. It gave out long before the rest of the class, leaving them zipping by her as she practically puttered towards the finish line.

Ouch.

Jalian laughed with glee and used the timing she'd figured out in practice to hit it just right - better reflexes than silly modern humans helped.

Oh, she liked this speed!
