[Class #1: The Higher Than a Kite Job]

“You all came back!” Well, not all of them. But several of them were familiar. Parker had sent out an email to meet at a portal to the Maryland mountainside for their first class, and to wear light-weight clothes and bring shoes they could run in. “We’re hiking in a bit.” She grinned. “To where we left the equipment!”

"Hope none of you are afraid of heights," Eliot said. "Or, you know, developed a fear of 'em in the last two weeks. Today we're going hang gliding."

He figured that would get most of 'em excited enough for the hike, right there.

“And we have helmets and instructors and stuff, and you’re going to have to be careful,” Parker said at the speed of sound. “Oh. If you haven’t taken one of our classes before, I’m Parker. This is Eliot.”

"We know most of you, but what the hell, it's tradition. Go ahead and introduce yourselves, tell us why you picked the class, that sorta thing. When we get to the top of the trail, I figure none of you'll want to think about more than the instructions and getting off the ground anyway."

“And there will be snacks.” Parker nodded solemnly. “I’ll never break that promise.”

Eliot was waiting for all the students to make it airborne in case anyone had an issue. So he, at least, was easy enough to catch.

"How did the psychotic class go?" Parker asked. Yes, she knew what the real name of it was. No, she wasn't sure there was a difference.

Even someone as used to Parker's . . . Parkerness as Eliot was still sometimes had trouble following it. "The what class?"

"The one at the Community Center. Psych-whatever. Or was it about psyching people out?"

Sometimes Parker just didn't pay attention if it wasn't shiny enough, let's be real.

"Psionics," Eliot said. "Telepathy and clairvoyance and shit." Look at Eliot, pretending he'd known that term for more than a day. "You know, what Nate likes to pretend he can do when he convinces a guy he's sick or something."

Admittedly, what Nate did was possibly more impressive, just because it wasn't based on some magic brain powers.

"It was pretty good. Had some interesting people there." Mostly criminals. So a good crowd.

"Ohhhh." Sometimes Nate was scary when he did that, like when he'd hypnotized Hardison without him even knowing that one time. "Are you going to learn how to do that?" She frowned, having mixed feelings. On the one hand, wow, very useful. On the other hand: creepy. That's what they had Nate for!

"I'm hopin' to learn how to keep folks from doin' it to us." Eliot gave her a knowing look. "That's why I wanted you and Hardison to go along."

Hardison was easier to ~~bully~~ talk into doing things, so he was the one who'd actually showed up with him, yesterday.

"Hmmmm." That did sound like a good idea. "What's the teacher like?" And would they mind if she just showed up next week?

Extraordinarily hot. "Very honest. Got a pretty big ego on her, but considering she made a volunteer move her arm and thumb her nose at Kathy to demonstrate how she could control someone else's movements, I'd say she's earned that."

That was also creepy, but: volunteer. And, she was going to teach them how not to have someone do that to them. "You're sure she's not building a brainwashed army to do her bidding?"

Some of Hardison's movies were scarier than others.

Now how the hell was he supposed to be sure of that?

"If she is, it's a very small army."

Not that that would stop it from potentially being a very successful one.

"Hmmmm." And even if she was, well. She'd be better off knowing who was at the head of the army. And if she got brainwashed too, at least she'd be with Eliot and Hardison. "Would she mind if I just showed up next week too?"

"Don't think so. She seemed to have kind of a 'the more the merrier' philosophy. Kathy was worried because she hadn't signed up ahead of time, but there wasn't a problem there, either."

"Cool." She bumped her shoulder against his. "You think it's a good idea for me to be there too?" This was his area, doing the reconnaissance and double-checking and all. If he thought it would be better for her to stay out, she would.

"I do," Eliot said. "Maybe it won't help against elder gods or gremlins or whatever, but I figure around here, we could use any advantage we can get."

"Okay then. I'll go with you guys next week." Parker grinned as another student took off. "And in the meantime, we teach people to flyyyy."

Eliot couldn't help but smile back at that. "You're really loving this job, huh."

"I thought-- I thought I would get sick of it," she admitted, all in a rush. "I thought it would cut into our work. Or I thought they would be way more annoying. But they listen and they like this stuff and they're going to use it to do cool things--" She kind of got Archie, now. Needing to pass on what he knew. "And yeah. I do." Parker grinned at him, unashamed. "So do you."

Eliot nodded. "Yeah. It's nice to see them get excited by it all."

A quick look around to make sure no one was watching, and a fast hug. "Thanks for being my teaching partner."

Whoa. Parker hugging. Those always ended up taking him by surprise.

"Thanks for draggin' my ass into this."
