Fun with Magic | Friday, First period

Class was out on the lawn again today. The muggy, hot, summer lawn. Not that Bob was bothered by the temperature.

"Well!" He clapped his hands together. "I hope you've all had a fun time and learned a bit about what magic can and can't do for you. I realise that mostly we've been using spelled objects or illusions, but for our last class, I won't be the one supplying any of it. Well, except for these."

He nodded at the box Anders had set in front of him, which this time contained ten flags - five red and five blue, each on a stake about two feet long. "You'll be in teams for this one." He mimed cutting the class in half and shoving them apart. "Red team, your leader is Anders. Blue team, yours is Elsa." The colours were completely unintentional, naturally. "The object of the game is to capture all the other team's flags. You can't outright hide your own, but you can make them difficult to find."

He grinned and nodded at Elsa and Anders, then cheerfully turned to the rest of the class. "Mind the cold!"

Didn't every summer class want to end with a massive snowball fight?

Lottie didn't even get around to wondering about the potential magic of the flags. She was too busy looking thoughtfully at the fact that Bob hadn't interacted with the box of flags at all.

Okay... Okay, Elsa could do this. As Bob spoke, she was peeling off her gloves, and taking a deep breath, and she could do this. The trick was to make enough snow that was going to melt again after class was through, and she was pretty sure she had that part figured out.

Once Bob was finished speaking, she held her hands up into the air, and the area around her team was filled with falling snow.

...

That actually worked? It actually worked!

"It's a nice break from the heat," Elsa replied, smiling faintly. "And from the status quo. My dog appreciates it, too."

That was because he was a malamute, Elsa.

Ada didn't mind the hot, actually. It was the muggy that bothered her, and she was absently scraping at her skin while she listened to Mr. Bob Sir.

Then the snow started, and she froze. "No," Ada whispered to herself, her eyes darting back-and-forth in alarm. She had nothing to cover herself with, she was just wearing a long, flowing skirt and a tank-top. And it was hot enough out that she knew the first flakes would melt when they hit her skin. She was going to get wet.

This was a disaster.

This part, Elsa had no trouble with. She made certain the snow kept falling around her team (for now) and stooped down to gather up a snowball in her bare hands.

After throwing it, she realized that, oh, right. She could just...

Create snowballs. In her hands. She could do that, too.

She was learning, okay? She hadn't used some of these tricks since she was seven.

Lottie watched in bright awe. "That is WELL AMAZIN. Are you part yeti?"

"Um, no," Elsa replied, blinking. "My parents were both human, as far as I'm aware."

And as far as they had been aware, too. Probably. She couldn't exactly ask them now.

This was harder for Anders than it was for Elsa, but he wasn't about to let his team down. He closed his eyes and concentrated until the spell worked and snow flurries began where he wanted them to fall.

He wouldn't be much use throwing snowballs today, but he could certainly keep the snow coming for the length of class.

At some point during class, a snowball found itself hurling mysteriously at the back of Bob's head.

Lottie pointed forcefully at Bob. "Why can't you touch anything?"

Ada made a beeline for Bob before the snowball fight could really get underway. "I can't participate today," she said, using the words Duncan had drilled into her in case of a situation where water was going to happen, "--for medical reasons. Can I do something else instead?"

By the end of class, Anders looked pretty pleased with himself as he tossed snowballs from hand to hand. Apparently his practice had paid off.
