International Cuisine | Monday, first period
Hannibal greeted his students as usual at Portalocity, then nodded and started. "Today we will actually be jumping slightly in time, since our restaurant isn't open until the afternoon." Really, how on earth had he lived without portals?
"Our destination today is Lima, Peru. The primary language there is Spanish; I imagine some of you may speak it as well, so please speak up so the others will know they can use you as a resource. Peru's standard cuisine owes much to any number of immigrant groups in the area; the restaurant we'll be visiting pares down some of those influences and focuses on local ingredients and flavors from the Amazon forest. The chef has researched quite a bit, and formed relationships with local suppliers that enable him to offer a wide variety."
The portal opened, and they would step through into a wide, sunny street in front of the restaurant.

Sit and eat!
like I'd like to.Re: Sit and eat!
Arroz con coco was less exciting when it arrived than she'd anticipated. Especially as she'd managed to decide it meant "chocolate corn" instead of "coconut rice".
She was reasonably certain that the Chocolate absoluto was going to be completely amazing, though.

Thus spake the fourteen year old.

And, since ordering based on what she wanted to say had worked so well for the first course, she'd happily move on to bife spicy for her main.

Look, the important thing was that she tried. Right?
Re: Sit and eat!
"Don't worry," Hannibal told her. "They're used to tourists here. You're doing better than most."
Re: Sit and eat!
SHE COULD WORK WITH THIS.
So, randomly picking one thing off of each section of the menu it was going to be.
Empanadas de yuca! Which turned out to be a sort of veggie and chestnut pie - totally a winner.
Churos pishiprones! Was... not at all what she'd been expecting, what with being snails stuffed with sausage and tapioca, but after a bit of fiddling, she found herself pleasantly surprised (if a bit desperate for a drink of water. Chorizo was spiiiiicy). She was game to try everything once, though. And now she could mark eating large snails for some reason off of her bucket list!
Juane de pato pekin? Was duck! Really nice duck, actually, with rice and hoisin sauce. It didn't last long at all.
Inchicapi de gallina was a nice, thick sort of chicken-and-peanut soup. Mabel was actually tempted to get seconds of this, but there were still three menu sections left and she was starting to get full and slow down, here.
Doncella casho? Was a sort of sauteed fish-and-nuts-and-mushrooms thing. Mabel approved!
Encurdito de la región? Pickles. Just straight-up pickles.
And for dessert? The puzanga rosada, which was the fanciest, most pink thing Mabel had ever had on a plate in front of her, and it tasted like roses and apples and grapefruit and magic. Mostly magic. She couldn't help but make little happy sounds as she ate it. At all. Because. Because.
And... that accomplished, she... was too full to feel feeling. Ever again. And was probably going to die. She'd die happy, don't get her wrong, but...
Way better than death by Smile Dip, anyway.

She just... needed to digest. For a month.

It was a shame she'd left her camera back in the dorms. Those snails would have been a wonderful scrapbookortunity.

Did it count if you were toasting with fruit juice?
Oh well!

Talk to Hannibal!
OOC!
Apparently so are ants; I couldn't find them on the menu, but my Spanish is pretty abysmal.
