Outdoor Adventures Time! Tuesday, period 1

[The Up the River Job]

Like last week, there had been a portal waiting for students at the school, and like the week before that, they were told to bring swim-suits.

"We don't have a lot of time before we get goin' today," Eliot said. "Our activity's gonna take the whole class period. So we'll get right to it." He gestured everyone through the portal, then spread his arms as they came out the other side, on a clear patch of a tree-filled hillside. "Welcome to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, where the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers converge!"

“And yes we asked for swimsuits, but that’s going to be because you’ll get wet, not necessarily go swimming,” Parker added, looking gleeful. “We’re going tubing!” She pointed down to the small docks a few dozen yards away. The large inner tubes were visible in the water from there.

"As always, we're givin' you options: we got a nice, easy, mellow ride on the Shenandoah,. If you can't swim, this one'll be for you. It's never too deep or fast for most people to just walk out of. But everyone'll be wearin' a lifevest anyway. It'll keep you floating and your head above water if something happens." Eliot held up one of the vests. "For those of you lookin' for excitement, there's class II rapids on the Potomac. Those are beginner rapids, but plenty excitin' anyway."

Parker beamed. “Helmets too, just in case you fall out, because there’s rocks. But it should still be pretty safe. And you don’t need them on the float trip, just the rapids.”

"You get into trouble, you yell out for me or Parker. Or make noise in any way you can if you can't yell."

“Keep an eye on the people in the same group, and let’s go!” Parker looked ready to vibrate out of her skin.

Mabel rarely worried about looking dorky, like, ever. She was happy to pull on a vest and a helmet, today. This class was so wonderfully exciting!

Oh, Cosette didn't mind the vest at all, even if she would readily concede it looked dorky (though maybe not in those specific terms). If that was what it took for her to keep having fun in this class, she'd gladly pay that price.

She considered the nice easy float for a bit, but . . . no. The rapids looked much more fun.

Ringo looked around as the students milled around getting ready. "I wonder if anyone is interested in a race." She didn't realize she'd said that out loud.

Jalian was in a suit with a top as tiny as she could get away with and a bottom not much larger. And had a knife strapped on her leg.

The rivers didn't look too bad, but sometimes they were deceiving. "What does 'class II' mean?"

"Basically it means gentle rapids. They're still whitewater, but with large, clear channels to get through that you can spot without scouting ahead. A good swimmer could probably make it through without getting injured."

Jalian nodded. "But we aren't swimming."

"Not unless you fall out of your tube." Accidentally or on purpose. Hey, Eliot had been a teenager, once. "It's just a way of explainin' how rough the water is."

Jalian nodded again. It seemed a little silly to her, but the persons in this timeline did seem to love to classify things.

Of course Edward was packing up and heading after Parker, grinning like a damned fool.

Rapids!

Rapids rapids rapids rapids rapids!

Mabel bounced all the way to the water! And then, once she was in the water, she was all too happy to let the water continue bouncing her!

The rapids were obviously the way to go here. Alana climbed into her tube and headed down the river.

WHEEE. (And occasionally OW, when she didn't steer well enough to avoid bumping a rock. But mostly WHEE.)

"Yep," Alana returned easily. "Just, some of the rocks come up kind of fast, you know?"

"He did great," Alana shouted back over the rushing of the rapids. "And it's a good week for it, too. Getting too hot not to be in the water."

"That would be awesome," Alana agreed. "Hey, d'you think you guys will do something like this the second half of summer, too? It would be fun."

No, after about ten seconds Cosette was sure she didn't regret choosing the rapids at all. She might even have been trying to get her tube to spin a little more, because that part was fun too.

The tube was so odd! It moved very differently than a boat did. Once Jalian got the hang of it, though...this was actually a little fun. And the water felt nice.

She was probably going to look boring, but Kira chose the ride with Eliot. The thought of taking a slow ride where she could enjoy the scenery and not lose her lunch was really enticing at the moment.

Alex didn't even have to think twice about choosing the rapids option, she wasn't going to pass that up.

And Eliot was enjoying a nice relaxing cruise down the Shenandoah, with only the usual amount of scanning the treeline on either side for threats.

He pointed out the various bits of wildlife he spotted that way to anyone who might be listening. There were loads of turtles and deer and the occasional fox to be seen.
